Well I would rather hear Mean Street than I Can't Drive 55. But I respect Sammy not wanting to sing DLR era songs, because he didn't write them and felt that he couldn't do them justice.
I am a fan of Dave but if I had to pick my favorite era in VH it would be 1985-96.without question!
And I think that you have rocks in your head if you think that Dave will sing better than Sammy in VH after hearing him sing on DLR band!Dave sounds like he has a bad cold when he is singing on that album.

I agree with you on the fact than Sammy's voice is better than Dave's these days. Maybe I was a little bit harsh when I mentioned that you would have rocks in your head if you wanted Sam back in VH. ANY NEW RELEASE from VH is a blessing but I am a little over excited with the prospect of Dave returning.

I don't think that Meanstreet or Romeo Delight would have sounded good with Sammy.
And I don't think that Dave will sing any Sammy songs on the next tour, so we'd rather don't blame Sammy for not singing Dave songs.
Meanstreet is a way better tune than ICD55, though.

Oh man Mean Street clearly!! Besides the fact that it is a better song in my opinion but it is also a VAN HALEN song and this is a Van Halen board!

I thought Gary did an awesome version of 'Mean Streets.' In fact, most of the Dave songs sounded terrific on the last tour.
If Dave is in the band, I have to wonder what Sammy/Gary songs he could pull off.. I just couldn't imagine Dave doing something like 'Dreams.'

Achievements:
Well, no real surprise, but I think Mean Street is a far better song than 55.
It certainly would have been nice to see VH play a more varied setlist in the Sammy era. Not only should they have attempted a few more Dave era tunes (DOA seems like one Sam could have done), but they also should have had more variety from that era. Virtually any VH boot from the Sam era has the identical setlist, which gets a bit old. And I think that Gary did great on the Dave tunes (except for Romeo Delight).
Damn, this post of mine makes almost no sense. Mean Street beats I Can't Drive 55.

What would we talk about if there was only one singer in VH's history.

I know this an old topic of discussion, but while visiting vhvault.com (go Jerel) I was reminded of Sammy's ego and stubborness in relation to playing Dave era songs live. http://www.vhvault.com/welcome.html
The full set list for this Sammy era concert contains three Sammy solo songs and only three Dave era songs. Who out there thinks I Can't Drive 55 or One Way To Rock are better songs than Mean Street, Romeo Delight, Runnin' With The Devil or most other Dave era songs for that matter. Gary may have not been the greatest fit for VH, but at least the set list for the live shows was what it should be. One third Dave, one third Sammy and one third new album. Anyone who want Sammy back in the band has rocks in their head. I am a fan of Sammy but if I had to pick a favorite VH era, 1978 to 1984 would win without question. Having said that I don't think we will be hearing Dave sing any Van Hagar songs live next year.

Absolutely no contest here.
Mean Street IS Van Halen. The guitar, the attitude, it's all there.
Can't Drive 55 was a good protest song against a silly law when it was written, but to be honest, I don't even know why Sammy still performs the song live now. It's no longer relevant to anything, since the 55 MPH speed limit is long gone.
As for Sammy not singing Van HALEN songs, I think it was a good call, whatever his motivation was. Sammy is NOT David Lee Roth, and Van Hagar was NOT Van HALEN, so why try to be? Cherone was covering TWO bands, so his situation was a little different. BTW, whoever said that the VD III set list was 1/3 Van HALEN, 1/3 Van Hagar, and 1/3 VD III, I don't know what set list you were looking at. It was more like 70% Van HALEN, 20% Van Hagar and 10% VD III.
BTW, to whoever uploaded the VD III tour clips to Napster and mislabeled them as "excellent quality" - you're an asswipe. Wasted my time downloading Mean Street and Unchained only to cringe at the sound of Cherone screeching out songs that are not his.
The horror.... the horror.....

I think we're all in agreement that we'd rather hear VH than Sammy solo played at a VH concert.
Although I don't really mind playing One Way to Rock, since Eddie smokes that one compared to the original recording. But ICD55 is kind of silly for them to play. Love the song, but, erm, it's not VH.
Oh yeah, and Sammy still plays the thing at concerts because the people in the audience still want to hear it

No contest between these 2 songs: Mean Streets ALL THE WAY!!!
Though I DO like ICD55...but it is not even close to the rage and the guitar sound that is found in Mean Streets!
