Today I have become re acquainted with my DLR band cd after having moved and it being in a box for about a year. I popped it in today and was thinking to myself ,Why the hell does Dave keep trying to sing so friggin high?. I dont think he could hit some of those notes in 1980. Much of the material on this disc is in a higher register than much of the classic VH material ala Robert Plant. I saw the Diamond one at Trump's marina in Atlantic City on his Dave saves the day tour and thought he nailed most of the Vh material. Some of the screams and stuff werent there but I was pleasently supprised.
I think that much of the Classic VH sound vocally can be attributed to Dave always coming in a little flat (slightly lower ) during the chorus relative to MA and EVH singing the harmonies giving the vocals a full rich sound.
Back to the DLR band cd. I think that "Slam Dunk is about the limit of how far DLR should push his voice. The 12 bar blues thing he does is phonomenal "Right Tool for the Job" I think."We are going to have the hap hap happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny F*****g Kay"

Rock singers who are in their mid-40's shouldn't try to sing high. There are some exceptions but the voice changes as we age. I haven't listened to Dave's new song but I get the idea. I'll have to go visit his site now.

I couldn't agree more. When I saw Dave live last year he nailed all of the VH stuff perfectly.
Everytime I hear him sing high I just cringe. He should always stay around the "Beautiful Girls" register. He sings that stuff perfectly.
