A friend of mine heard on HOward Stern that "3" was the most returned album in history.. in other words.. they sold 500,000 or whatever.. and 230,000 copies were brought back to the stores or re-sold at used CD stores.
Is this true.. or is my friend full of shit?

I doubt it was the most returned album in history, but who knows? I didn't care for it at first but now I love it, so I'm glad I kept it.)

I highly doubt that VH3 is the most returned album in history. I like the record and it's a part of my VH collection.

The 1978 KISS solo albums also flooded the stores but many were returned later or went straight to discount bins.

I'm not sure if the system has changed at all in the last few years, but the RIAA awards were given based on units shipped. Meaning, if 1,000,000 copies of an album were shipped to various music stores in the U.S. (and beyond), they were counted, and the artist was given a Platinum award. Record stores had the ability to return unsold units to the distributor after a certain period of time. III was certified Gold because slightly more than 500,000 units were shipped. The "return" figures could be based on those sent back to the distributor. I don't believe there's any way to accurately determine how many were re-sold to used CD shops, etc.

I have heard through a cd distributor that VHIII has been discontinued. Those of you who have it may have a collectors item if so many used discs weren't avalible for .99 at your local record store.
