Show Your Love = I'm The One

How did SYL become ITO? Why would they change the title...SYL makes a lot more sense to me.

Anyone have any reason / speculation on this one?

I'm not sure about that. It seems like Show Your Love would have been a better choice for the title because they say it more than I'm The One.

My assumption was that it changed when the 1st album came out...probably a record company decision or something like that. Was always refered to in bootlegs by Dave as "SYL"

I have no idea what the real reason is, but it's an interesting question.

Read off of a sheet of paper, the title I'm The One has a lot more attitude than the title Show Your Love. Maybe that's the reason. Somebody (the band, Ted Templeman, Donn Landee, or someone at the label) thought that with Dave's bravado, and the aggressive guitar style of that album, the I'm The One title would look better on the back cover. Like album covers, song titles can convey an attitude to a person before they even listen to the music.

That could be right. They already had a song title with Love in it (Feel Your Love Tonight) and didn't want I'm The One to look like it was a ballad or pop song.

So that would have been 3 songs with "love" in the title. That might have been the reason right there that Show Your Love was retitled.

Maybe that's why they changed it. They wanted to be different. They say "show your love" a lot and just wanted to be different or it'd be redundant. ???????? And the word "love" doesn't seem to be Dave's favorite word, so 3 songs like that wouldn't be feasable. [img]smilies/confused.gif[/img] Plus the number 3 seems to have a bad name in VH history. [img]smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

I think the title "I'm The One" is way better then if they called it "Show Your Love"

Incidentally this song is one of the all time greatest Van Halen songs. So, so underrated....

I always figured that some WB suit decided that "I'm The One" would look better on the back cover of VH. Personally, I like the title "Show Your Love" better. But hey, at least VH isn't like the Smashing Pumpkins, where the song titles have NOTHING to do with the lyrics of the song.

It's as if Ed said, "Yes, I can fit 2 billion notes into a song." [img]smilies/devil.gif[/img]

The intro alone kills me, but the second solo is incredible. The notes just cascade over each other.

Also, Dave's lyrics, Mike and Ed's backup vocals, and the attitude add up to make it the classic it is. After "On Fire" it's my favorite song off of the album.
