I'm sure this has been discussed before, but does anyone else think this song is absolutely kickass!??
I just listened to it for the first time in a while, and it's really great. The solo is bluesy, and it's just got a great feel to it.
Personally I don't like the sound of Gary's yelling, but the lyrics are pretty good, and Ed's playing is AMAZING! I really think there's some real good stuff on III, that if people gave it a chance, they would appreciate.
I know it doesn't have the attitude of Roth, or the pop sing along of Hagar, but this album really showcases Eddie's playing abilities. Year To The Day is one of his best, most creative songs ever, IMO.

OK . . . carefully set down the crack pipe . . .
now, slowly back away . . . everything will be fine!!
Actually, all kidding aside, it is a pretty good tune. All I've been listening to lately is the classic VH though!!

I must have played this song for about 5 or 6 people and they usually start laughing and say something along the lines of "who is this? Whitesnake?" Then they normally say "damn this solo is so bad, who is this?" Then I tell them it was Van Halen - no one EVER believes that until I show them the writing on the CD and the case.
Aweful tune in my opinion. Horrendous singing, terrible/messy guitar solo and way way too long.

I love Eddie's solos on that album, and on YTTD it rules!
I think the song needs Mikeys backing vocals.
III has some good tunes though."I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone
"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth
WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.

Year To The Day is pretty good. They don't really have any other songs like it. Eddie's solo is awesome.

I think it's an blatant retread of FEELIN', which is also a much better song. I absolutely hate YEAR TO THE DAY. It's unlistenable...complete guitar masturbation and some of the worst vocals ever put to tape.
Uggh! (No offense.)"I had a girl beating on my hotel door all night...She was screaming, crying. Finally, I said, 'What the hell'...and I let her out!"- DLR

I never really liked the song myself. Although, I guess compared to everything else on 3 it's not too bad, but that's not saying much. To me, YTTD was clearly the bands attempt at Stairway To Heaven rather than Feelin', but either way this song, like the rest of the album, was just not Van Halen to me. Hell, I even tried once to pretend it was Tribe Of Judah ... and I still didn't like it.
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne
"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello
"There is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne. Nobody takes that throne. Here's why it's different with Eddie: when a great guitar player passes, you just move on to another, right? But in this case, Eddie wasn't just a 'guitar player'. We're talking about a guy who changed culture and how we play guitar. He was like an alien coming in and fucking everything up so much that even the legends beforehand are like, 'Okay .. what is happening here? What sorcery is this?'" -Nuno Bettencourt

Great topic,
Its amazing just how subjective music really is. The first time I heard this tune I thought it was an amazing song with the most creative and bad ass solo ed has played in years. Yes, you heard me, Years! When I saw it played live on the MTV Australia thing, I damn near shit my pants. To long? Hell, I've always wanted VH to move beyond their 3-4 minute radio friendly tunes. I love the way he begins the solo very slowly and builds the emotion along with the speed and tempo. For instance, the part when he strums very fast for like several seconds is just amazing. That my friends is passion, something he has sorely lacked for some time. I do agree, some Harmony from Michael would have added a nice spice on the CD. I felt Gary did a great job singing this live. Also, the lyrics in this song are light years beyond anything Sammy ever wrote and much deeper than Daves stuff. Anyway, just my opinion. Let the Stoning begin! I like the cd version of YTTD, but I LOVE the live
take on it. EVH really ripped the solo up live.
Kind of has a Led Zeppelin Since I've Been Lovin'
You feel to it.

First, the song is a Stairway ripoff.
Second, Gary sounded bored, almost like he literally yawned while droning through his track.
Third, the guitar solo is pure shit. Ed even said so; it was just a bunch of scrubby noise during the basic track to hold the place for a REAL solo. Mike Post convinced him to keep it.
IMO, the WORST track on III. By far.Don't bark at me...I didn't name ya.

I think it's a great track. One of my faves of off 3.

I'm glad you brought it up. I fucking love this song! I think of it more as Feelin' part 2 rather than a retread. I love Feelin' also. Both songs are very bluesy and Zeppelin like and I like the soft/heavy aspect of both.

I have a feeling Tulsi Gabbard will last the longest in Trump's cabinet and will eventually take over MAGA when he's out of office. Sorry Vance, but he's milquetoast. Tulsi is the future!
