So there is is, Saturday afternoon and my friend and I are sitting in our usual seat in McDonald's talking about music. Now, I'll admit that I don't understand, get, or know music, but my friend, he's one of those musical types.

The topic we come up with is what song is MUSICALLY the best from Van Halen. He kind of cops out and doesn't give me one, but rather he comes up with his picks for best from each "era." I figured I'd get the opinion of rabid fans on this.

For DLR he picks the song I'll Wait. He says he can't nail down what there is about this song, it just has "everything going for it."

For SH he picks When It's Love. He likes the simplicity, the catchiness, and the depth without sounding deep ("How do I know when it's love? I can't tell you but it lasts forever.")

For Gary he picks Once for the fact that, IHHO, there's so much going on in the background of the song.

So then, what do YOU think is musically the best?
"Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

wow, good topic.
i can tell that your friend is into the ballad types, which is cool, but not me.

dave: although i agree that i'll wait is a really awesome song, i gotta go with my absolute favorite vh song, me wise magic. i think that it combines the musical talent of all the members, while giving a stunning intro that sets the mood for the whole song. (shit, i sound like a musical critic for some newspaper).

sammy: i don't really like when it's love, it's kinda boring i think. there's two that are equally brilliant i think, but are so different from each other.
1) right now was the song that got me hooked on van halen, from the amazing piano intro that sets the mood for the whole song (you can tell that intros are important IMO), to the catchy lyrics, to eds solo that isn't technically challenging compared to some, but knocks your socks off anyway because of how well it fits with the song. then al's little breakdown at the end is kinda cool.
2) humans being is so awesome because of how much energy is put into the song. the amount of emotion that you can tell from sammy's voice is amazing. plus it's got a catchy rhythm and the solos are awesome. alex plays solidly in this song as well.

gary: i don't have VH3.

GREAT topic! I have thought about this sort of thing, but I can never really nail it down to just one per era, so these are my answers for today:

Dave: Jump
Sammy: Mine All Mine
Gary: Once

Well, I'll have to start out with that "average song at best": "Hear About It Later". I'm not a musician so I can't describe in musical terms, but I love that intro, and then the way the music comes in and the guitar's just soaring all over the place, then the little break down with Mikey and Al, then Edward comes in with a cool solo, then back to soaring for the ending. Also like the music on songs like "Everybody Wants Some!!", "Mean Street", ""Dirty Movies"", "Little Guitars", "Me Wise Magic" and so many others. For the Sammy era, I really like what he did with "Humans Being", "Poundcake" and yeah, I like the music for "Right Now", just wish it had different lyrics/theme.

This is a sweet topic.

DLR: Everybody Wants Some!! -> I personally find it tough to beat the drumming.
Hagar: Tie between Right Now and The Seventh Seal. Both have this energy about them that is unmatchable.
Cherone: Year to the Day. Excellent guitar.
I'm one of those crazies on your block.

Dave-era: I'm The One. How many notes did he play in that intro!? I'd like to see the sheet music for it!

Sammy-era: Aftershock. Really makes a statement and has a lot of emotion.

Gary-era: One I Want. Cool intro once again. Good song.

Hmmmm. Well, first off SNM, your bud is pretty soft me thinks with those pickins but thats cool.

Dave era- Man this is tough. Either Hear about it later (complete package with killer all around intro, verses, chorus, solo....) or I'm the one. That song really captured somthing man and structurely, its fantastic.

Sam Era- Musically, I'd have to go with 5150 (especially LWAN version).

Gary Era- Year to the Day.

See, there's a backstory to this. The guy only owned VH1, FUCK, Balance, and 3. Sure, he had stolen a bunch of songs from my CDs in the past, but you know. So I buy the remasters and "lend" him my normal copies of the albums and he gets to listening to them and "discovers" I'll Wait. Just grabbed him from the beginning.

I don't really have an ear for music myself. I just know what sounds good to me I would say I have to agree with him on Once. I think From Afar means a lot to me just because I'm in a long distance relationship right now.

In the Sammy era I really dig the theme they have going in Aftershock. Is it musically the best? I don't know, but it grabs me with that bridge... "She opened up my eye..."

Got to think about the DLR era for a while more though.

DLR era - Everybody wants some - musically this song is just a total monster IMHO.

Hagar - Poundcake. another aural juggernaught.

Cherone - Dirty Water Dog. From afars kinda neat too.
