Damn! I downloaded that album off Napster and it blew me away. The rock, the rap edge w. the Jamaican rapper, the country element, the blues,.... This album blew Skyscraper (which I think was his weakest album) away. Eat Em', ALAE, and DLR Band come in close seconds. If you guys don't agree, you've at least got to admit that this was his most deverse work.

Definitely his most diverse, but I'd say it's his weakest. The first four songs are really good, then it loses me with A Little Luck, Cheatin' Heart Cafe, Hey You Never Know, and No Big Ting. Then it gets back on track for the last six songs. It does have some very strong songs; Big Train, Night Life, Sunburn and Experience on it.
IMO A Little Ain't Enough is far and away the heavyweight champion of David Lee Roth solo albums.

I don't know. I actually liked the songs like "Cheatin' Heart Cafe." To each his own. In my opinion, the award of worst Roth album goes to Skyscraper.
What do you think of Steve Vai though? I'm sorry, but he just reminds me so much of Yanni. (His album Passion and Warfare and Roth's Skyscraper are two of the worst albums I've ever heard)The guy is a pretty respectable player, but his work on EEAS and Skyscraper sound so dated and like pale imitations of Eddie.
As for Jason Becker and Terry Kilgore. Their work on Roth's ALAE and YFLM were great.

I think Eat Em and Smile is awesome, the vibe is so pure and ecstatic. Skyscraper has great songs in my opinion, but the production really lets the material down. Hina on the Skyscraper album is really a hidden gem (Jem-Get it
) in the Roth catalogue.
I'm not very familiar with Vai outside of his work with Dave, though I love his guitar playing with Roth. But frankly I think Dave's best material is ALAE, after he finished working with Vai.

I like YFLM, my favorite songs from it are YFLM and She's My Machine.
I agree that it is very diverse. But I would say that it's Dave's second worst album.
My least favorite is DLR Band. That is a very poor album to me, when you compare it to Dave's first three solo albums.
Also, Dave's voice sounds very weak to me on DLR Band.
I think Vai is incredable!!! EEAS is the best album, I would say Skycraper is secound followed by ALAE.
I am moving this topic to songs and albums.

Dude I'm glad I'm not the only one who digs She's my machine. Killer groove. I could actually see Van Halen playing this tune live on the tour. If they ever tour again BTW.Out.

I agree that YFLM is one of the best tunes on this album. I also love Dave's voice on Sunburn...he sounds great.

I think YFLM has some of Dave's best lyrics, and it's fun to hear him try his hand at some different styles. That album reflects Dave's personality more than the straight forward rock albums, I think.
On the downside, Dave's voice sounded weak on that album to me. The "yeah yeah!" on She's My Machine is probably what makes me think that. Terry Kilgore is no Jason Becker.
ALAE is Dave's best work, in my mind. It's right up there with Fair Warning for me. Everything about it is good, from the production to the feel of the songs.
Glenn, you're right about Hina. Skyscraper was over-produced, but it really worked for that song.
DLR Band is my least favorite solo work. Counterblast is just so lame... the album has some high points, but that song isn't one of them. Dave grabbed some run of the mill musicians and tossed the album together quickly, and it sounds like it. You can hear a qualitive difference in that album and Don't Piss Me Off, which wasn't recorded too much ahead of DLR Band.
People who only own EEAS and Skyscraper are really missing out on some great music on ALAE and YFLM. For $8 at a used store you just cannot go wrong with them, especially ALAE. If the wait for some new VH has got you down, go find ALAE. You won't regret it.

I think DLR Band is a modern classic, there are some very strong songs on this album - Slam Dunk, King of the Hill, Lose The Dress, Little Texas, Weekend with the Babysitter, and one of the greatest songs Roth has ever recorded (solo and w/VH) Black Sand.
I love the raw production and there is some killer guitar playing from Lowery, Kilgore and Hartman, its a very back-to-basics approach that totally suits the album.
My favourite DLR album is either ALAE or DLR Band, lately its been DLR Band.

hooligan: if your saying the guitar work on 'damn good' skyscraper is not worthy your smoking crack! the guitar on that song gives me chills, i dont know how you can deny the sound that comes from that song. i personally think skyscraper was more on vh ound than eeas, that was i bit to commercial but still great!
I have all dlr solo but dont get into most of it but a few songs here and there.
DLRBand: I hear some possible VH tunes that could have been. Little Texas is one i think would have suited the band.
I think SV did some brilliant stuff with DLR.
but i guess we are on a VH site.

Best alblum? Nope! *I* think that would have to be DLRband. The reasoning and prob the only reason with the exception of "slam dunk" was "Black sand and how it ended on a such a trippy note, if you know what I mean?
IMO he got way deep, it almost sounded like he was starting to write music like MWM and CGTSNM!I dunno maybe it just seemed that way?
