Here's an easy one...Who wrote better lyrics
Sammy or Dave???
MY answer: Dave
Sammy was a commercial song writer.Lyrics were always about love or social issues.
Dave wrote about attitude. Some of his best work was on Fair Warning. "See a gun is real easy - in this desperate part of town. Turns you from hunted into hunter..Go and hunt somebody down..Wait a minute now...Somebody said Fair Warning Lord...Lord strike that poor boy down!" Fucking awesome. I'm not sure what his motivation was but those lyrics are killer.

right now and humans being are my Hagar favorites (lyrically)
for dlr, woaw, there are so many, but one of my all-time favorite lines have to be
I been to the edge, an' there I stood an' looked down
You know I lost a lot of friends there baby, I got no time to mess around
Mmmm, so if you want it got to bleed for it baby
Yeah, got to got to bleed baby
Mmmm, you got to got to bleed baby
Hey, got to got to bleed baby
Ain't talkin' 'bout love
... this really sums it up!
cheers,
SToRMdave, we'd like to go upstairs, the two of us, with you ...

By a LONG SHOT my favorite David Lee Roth lyrics are...
"We was broke and hungry on a summer day...
They sent the sheriff down to try and drive us away... We was sittin' ducks for the police man... They found a dirty faced kid in a garbage can."
That song is the total shiznit. DLR was a better lyricist IMO.

The Sammy fans won't agree, but Dave has a unique way of saying things - very few cliches in David Lee Roth songs. What other singer would tell a chick she's "semi-good looking"?

As general lyricists, neither one is better than the other. They have their own respective styles, and that's it. Sam wouldn't be good in Dave's style and vice-versa. They're both cool. Sam's good with the love/social songs and Dave's good at the attitude songs. Both have written songs that I think aren't good lyrically, like Beautiful Girls and AFU, Big Fat Money. I always thought VH was a complete collaboration. Why is everyone giving credit to Dave or Sam?
Doesn't it read all their names on each and every album under "written by"?
Please steer me in the right direction if I am off course! But, watch out for that tree!

They are both talented in their own right. Sometimes Sammy got a little too cheesy for me ie... " Why Can't This Be Love ", " When It's Love ", Love Walks In ", "Can't Stop Lovin' You ", but other than those he was ok too. Both of them were very creative.

i'm sure that they are good in their own right, but i gotta say dave is my preference by far. he's very creative and funny at the same time. his attitude is cool, and i couldn't list one favorite line, but i've always thought that "i brought my pencil...gimme somethin to write on man" was pretty awesome, and describes dave very well.

Dave is the better lyricist imo.

For me it comes down to who's lyrics come to mind at interesting times. More often than not, they're Dave's. Was there anything truly witty or thought provoking between the time he left and 3? Not really.
Sams lyrics fit the songs, but don't extend beyond them. They're very singable.

I would have to say Sammy personally, because he came up with all the lyrics to his songs. He didn't put Dancin' In The Streets on his albums with Van Halen. I'm not saying that's a bad song it's just everyone has sung that! And to put it on a record of Van Halen... I think he could of wrote another version to Dancin' In The Streets. Every Sammy song has meaning to it. If you Dave fans would stop to listen to each lyric instead of complaining about Sammy's song you would understand what their about! These kind of topics are used to see how many people like Dave and how many like Sammy! They are both talented song writters. Some of you are still complaining about Sammy being the lead singer of Van Halen! He went out and did something Dave would never have done...He wrote When It's Love.... I love that song! I love all of the Sammy songs which he recorded for Van Halen! I like some Dave songs and those people who bag Sammy say they dont listen to Van Hagar as you guys call it but they have listened to it! I mean it's like what Sammy said on that interview this whole dispute with Van Halen is like going home and seeing your wife in bed with her ex who broke her heart so many times! I personally think Eddie is a jerk he couldn't even come up with a good come back to Dave at the music awards! All he could say is ..... Don't ever talk to me that way again... And how he should walk around wearing a cup!! But that's my opinion!

Sammy didn't write the lyrics to all the songs on those 4 albums.
