I decided to download some of the songs from 3 on my lovely Napster I found over the weekend. I have not bought the album, not did I see them in concert becuase I'm still holding a grudge after the threw Sammy away and the aborted Dave attempt in 96' After listening to a few songs, my thoughts were confirmed, 3 is terrible. Listening to Cherones voices gave me the hiby gibies.
However, I was more interested in Ed's playing and tried to focus on that. "A year to the Day", I am having trouble with. Does any feel like I do that song was poorly constructed? I think it tries to be too much like 'Feelin' from balance. Ed' solo seem to be a compulation of other solo's from previous albums, nothing original, and it does not fit in the song very well.
I will keep on listening and hopefully I can find others to download becuase I'm not paying for it, not even the six bucks at the used record store. Thoughts?

# 3 is definitely an aquired taste. LOL. I dig Year to the Day myself. I think Ed's work on that song is a shit load on the burly side. Out.

LMAO
The album itself sucks,in a whole but some of the tunes are ok if you can get into them(with the exception of How Many Say I......No hope in hell for that).I can't listen to the whole album from beginning to end. Try to ignore the lyrics and singing and some of it actually kicks ass. I've always had the feeling that III is an album that people just want to hate so bad, that they just refuse to find anything of value on it. I know that I would have preferred to have had an album with Dave singing at that time, and if not that, then one with Sammy, but there is quality material on III to my ears.
The sound of the album is disappointing, almost everyone (including EVH himself) agrees on that. And Gary sounds like he's constantly trying to sing out of his range (coupled with the fact that his voice seems to have lost something since his Extreme days).
But I really like the album, though it took me many listens to get to that opinion. The first time I played it, I didn't even get to the end of it I was so disappointed in it. But I gave it enough listens that it grew on me.
And I still think it's a better album than OU812.

I agree with Glenn in some points. VH3 really ain't a bad album, but it's just not as good as all the other Halen albums (even not OU812, Glenn... which I personally like pretty much ).
As for digging into the album... yeah, you really need some time to get into it, as the tunes aren't as catchy as VH tunes once used to be (average length: over 5 minutes )
So... if I gave all other VH albums 5 stars, I'd prolly give this one 3 1/2 or 4, as it's still better than most of the music coming out today .I'm a Dirty-Faced Kid... so could some cute female do me the favor and lick me clean, please?!<br /><br />"Nobody rules these streets at night but me... the ATOMIC PUNK!" - DLR (1978)<br /><br />"This must be just like living in paradise... and I don't wanna go home" - DLR (1988)<br /><br />"So put it off until judgment day... A year to the day is probably my favorite off the album, and performed live, one of the best I've ever seen and heard.
Not a huge fan of III, but that song live was the kill. Solo was mixed up in the middle of it and YTTD was brought back in brilliantly.
Shitload on the burly side. LOL! :burly:sheepa latta peepah dabba looka foh a moopy

3 does take some time to get used to. But there are some great songs on there like One I Want and Fire In The Hole, and I think Year To The Day is awesome and has a great solo. Bad spots: Gary's singing and lyrics, Josephina, How Many Say I.

It's really a shame Gary sounded like he did. He could do a LOT better than that.
Then again, the circumstances were pretty crazy back in '98...

I think it's safe to say that we all think "3" is a weak CD, but it blows my mind when people say the never have/wont buy it.
I mean, wouldn't the curiousity get to you eventually? Jeez, it aint like they put out a disco album with the Bee Gees on vocals.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>I totally agree. To say you won't buy it because you are holding a grudge.
The Eddie Van Halen who put out III is the same Eddie Van Halen who will be playing guitar on the next VH album. If that next album features David Lee Roth, are you going to continue the grudge and not buy it? I doubt it, but Eddie's the same guy, flaws and all.
