Just because I was curious, I did a little hunting and came up with (more or less) all the song titles that use the world Love in them from the past and current work of the VH lead singers:
Sammy

Try (Try to Fall in Love)

Love Has Found Me

Wounded in Love

Falling in Love

Love or Money

I'll Fall in Love Again

Your Love is Driving Me Crazy

I Don't Need Love

Two Sides of Love

Why Can't This Be Love?

Love Walks In

When It's Love

Can't Stop Lovin' You

Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)

The Love

Deeper Kind of Love
Grand Total: 16
Dave

Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love

Feel Your Love Tonight

Outta Love Again

Women in Love

So This is Love?
Grant Total: 5
Gary

Song for Love

That's Why I Love You
Grand Total: 2
What does this prove? Nothing. What purpose does it serve? None. I just had ten minutes at work and no other way to kill it

I think it clearly differentiates how the singes interpret love.
It's obvious that Dave is all about the phyical kind of love. Nothing wrong with that, and in light of the other lists, more unique. Gotta love Dave.RLRR LRLL

What it proves is that throughout his career, Sammy has used cheesy assed Hallmark card lyrics to sell records. Not that he hasn't had some good material along the way, but he always seems to revert back to the Velveeta train when all else fails.
Eat Us And Smile
Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!
...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

FORD
Your consistencey amazes me. Every mention of Sam, you have to throw in "cheese", or "Velveeta". I don't think Sam sets out to sell anything when he writes lyrics. He does use love/baby etc a lot for sure though.
What confuses me is how you can call Sam cheese and not see that DLR is the king of it himself! The raps, the stage moves, the death grip on the past, the lack of originality, it goes on and on. I think you need to keep the same glasses on when you evaluate your god.My Band

There's also "That's Why I Love You," the unreleased Gary song.
Let's assess the Van HALEN songs with "love" in the title:
ATBL: A hard rocker, a parody of punk music evidenced by the same three chords over and over.
FYLT: Another rocker with Dave's patented sense of humor (e.g. "We're gettin' funny in the back of my car, I'm sorry honey if I took it just a little to far."). Classic.
Outta Love Again: Hard rocking, non-commercial classic VH.
Women In Love: Great "ballad" if you want to call it that. No cheese here. Great artificial harmonics by Ed in a terrific introduction. Builds and rocks hard by the end.
So This Is Love?: One of VH's best songs. A bluesy tune that rocks hard, especially the live versions of it. The solo is very inventive and improv. This one really shows the high level of musicianship in the band.
And now the Van Hagar love songs:
WCTBL: "Only time will tell if we stand the test of time." Synthesizers. Enough said.
Love Walks In: Love and aliens with layers of synths and a lame-ass solo. :shudders:
When It's Love: CHEESE!
Can't Stop Lovin' You: MORE CHEESE!
Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do): This song is boring and Sammy's voice gives out on the high notes.
Amazing how the idea of love went from something physical and exciting to something sappy-ass after Dave left the band.

lou, i completely agree with you on the dave perspective, i think those songs are awesome.
but it looks like you're selling sammy short. don't tell me what love can do is not a sappy cheese ballad, and that's what you're labelling it as. that song's got balls, even though it's a little repetitive.
and, i really like love walks in, but that's just my perogative, i know that it's synthesisers galore, but hey, it's still not as cheesy as when it's love. dear lord...

Boing! Updated. That's what I get for glossing over the Van Halen stuff quickly thinking I knew which CDs had what on it."Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

What's so bad and cheesey about love songs? If we had some more songs like that and people paid more attention to then, we'd get along better in the world. Loves songs have their place too.

You know, they say, "Write about what you know."
Sammy writes a lot of things about finding love, being in love, or love in general. Of course he's been married several times and has a pack of kids.
Roth doesn't write love songs. He's never been married and, as far as any of us know, pretty much has a relationship with a woman just long enough to have sex and move on.
I think the tallies reflect their different attitudes. Of course it almost makes me fear for the future of humanity with so many people saying talking about love is cheese or sappy or whatever. It's a basic human emotion. If you think it's cheesed up, chances are you've never been in love."Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

Actually if you read his book, Dave has been in love three times. And one of those relationships was two years long I seem to recall.
Secrets is a love song. Just 'cos it isn't stated in black and white terms that a child, or even whitney houston could understand, doesn't mean it ain't a love song. It'll all end in beers...
