was between us two actually recorded? or were the lyrics and some music just written?

According to Sammy, VH recorded two versions of the song. The first one was produced by Bruce Fairbairn and the second with Glen Ballard.

Apparently the song was so good, that Fairbairn wanted a credit for that song and was fired as a result.

The band re-cut the song with Glen Ballard but the revised lyrics (written by Ballard) were never recorded.

I didn't know that they actually finished a version with Bruce Fairburn. Guess we'll just have to wait for Ed and the gang to grow old and die so that the record companies can start cashing in on these unreleased gems a la Hendrix.

I am as interested in this song as the next Van Hagar fanatic, but every time I start dwelling, I just crank 5150, OU812, F.U.C.K., and Balance and set my mind at ease.

I believe they also had to pay Sammy to put Can't Get this Stuff No More on BOV 1. I'm wondering if that was worked up around this same time or if that was something done a good amount of time prior.

It's really a shame as it was clear that they were not at the end of the road from an artistic/creativity standpoint but rather, just couldn't get along.

Had the reunion with Dave worked out that would have at least been a silver lining but since that didn't happen either.....

there were 2 versions of the song. the first was Closer to You and that was produced by Fairburn. he wanted writing credits and Ed and Sam (who Sammy says were actually getting along at the time) told him to get bent and reworked it wtih Glenn Ballard. It was then renamed Between Us Two. I don't remember if Sam ever worked with Ballard on new lyrics or not but I know that's what ed wanted at the time.

I don't think any part of the song has surfaced since by either Sammy or Van Halen. there was some thought that the music was used for Once and that is not right, the keys on Once were from a song called The Wish recorded for the FUCK sessions-sammy retooled the lyrics for the wish and released it as returning of the wish.

Great music. Too bad it was wasted. No offense to Gary but VHIII sounds like someone trying to shove a square peg into a round hole.
