This has got to be my favorite song by Van Halen EVER. I was 5 was the album came out and my older brother had the vinyl album. At age 5 I knew all the words to Hot for Teacher. Anyway this thread is about I'll Wait..although the lyrics are pretty lame (Dave hung a pic of a Calvin Klein model in her underwear next to his tv and wrote the lyrics to her) I fell in love with the lead synth, the drums, the bass, the backing vocals and the ripping guitar solo in the middle. God, I ove this song. Anyone else?

Although this song tends to get maligned by many VH aficionados, I for one think it is a great song. Killer drum sound, and one of Eddie's best solos ever, imho.

Yeah I love 'I'll Wait' - mainly because of the drums........just that groove he's sitting in, and the sound of the kick and snare. And that tom roll - da-da da da-da da-da-da awesome!!!

I agree, this song is highly underrated. The sound of the synth is mystic-sounding. You can just get caught up in the rhythm until the guitar solo comes in and knocks you on your ass.

I think this is the "dittiest" of the VH singles. I recall this song actually being described as a "ditty" either by Dave or by a music writer, back in the day. It's a peculiar little song, and one I've always had a bit of trouble liking. Then again, I agree the solo is amazing, and the song certainly doesn't sound like any other VH track...I wonder what "I'll wait til your love comes down" means, exactly. Does it mean that Dave is gonna wait til the model in question becomes real in his life? He'll wait until she gets off her pedestal? Hmm...must...cue...up...song...and...figure...it.. .out... That's great!
After a few weeks of hiatus I listened again to the album 1984 and hearing "I'll Wait" I thought I would start a topic called something like: "Is it just me, or does anybody think Van Halen should have never released that crap called I'll Wait" or "What VH song really sucks?" Opinions are like assholes: everybody has one, so that's my opinion => I'll Wait is the WORST song Van Halen ever recorded. The solo is great, but the lyrics, the verse, the crap-pop synth is just lame and boring."I used to jog, but the ice cubes kept falling outta my glass." Diamond Dave

Needle,
I couldn't disagree with you more. I think I'll Wait is one of VH's most underrated songs. There isn't a bad track on the entire 1984 album."It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth
"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

I'm in the group that thinks that I'll Wait is a poor song. So bad that in the past, whenever it came on the radio, I'd turn the station (Dreams is the only other VH tune that I would do that to). I think it has a lame, plodding, unmelodic keyboard riff, and it's probably the only DLR-era VH song where Dave sounds "forced" and out-of-place, as if he were singing someone else's cookie-cutter tune.

I've always thought that "I'll Wait" provided a nice contrast in between "Hot For Teacher" and "Girl Gone Bad." The drums are indeed killer on this tune.

I like I'll Wait. The drum work is awesome and the solo is pretty good. One of my least favorites on 1984 though.

I think "I'll Wait" is a great song. Just heard it last night on the radio--as others have mentioned it's a great drum song in terms of sound and groove. I think it's got way more of an edge to it than any of the keyboard based songs from the Sammy era.
