I may not think Van Hagar is anything compared to Van Roth, but I appreciate the guy's talent. And God, the early Montrose stuff is amazing. I love the riffs and raw sound and Sammy really delivers exactly what the doctor ordered. It's great car music or beer music.
I'm writing this now because I've never heard this stuff before until recently.
Anybody else a big MONTROSE (with Sammy) fan?"I had a girl beating on my hotel door all night...She was screaming, crying. Finally, I said, 'What the hell'...and I let her out!"- DLR

I like Sammy with Van Halen the most but I like Montrose a lot, too. The debut album is a rock masterpiece, and Ronnie's guitar playing and Sammy's voice were a great combination.

The first Montrose album is awesome. "Paper Money" wasn't quite as good, but it still rocks. Plus if you're keen to hear something from all eras of the band, pick up a copy of "The Very Best Of Montrose"...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

Achievements:
Check out the movie (on VHS) "The Stoned Age". It's pretty damn funny, a great Beer movie. Anyway there are a couple of parts that have Sammy/Montrose doing "Rock Candy" , great tune. The movie is worth a look. Came out around 95. Also the Bullett Boys did a decent cover of "Rock Candy" on the Wayne's World soundtrack, the first one I believe.
As for myself I am a big Sammy solo, pre-VH, fan. Danger Zone, Standing Hampton, VOA etc. Check out his Rematch CD. Early greatest Hits.

Rikk,
I do not want to degrade sammy VH, but I think his work in Montrose, and his work post VH is excellent. The first thread I started here, I tried to make the point that albums like Montrose, Marching to Mars and Ten 13 are Hagar's best work. This is a VH board, so most fans here are going to prefer Hagar's VH work, but the comparsion remains valid to me.

I think Ted Templeman once advised Ed that WB originally wanted Sammy in the band, based on Sammy's work with Montrose. But of course WB was thinking dollar signs, when they had no idea how wildly popular Dave would become in VH. See Glenn for more details on this.
I'm gonna shoot this over to Fans Meeting Place (music only) where it will get alot more attention.RLRR LRLL

No POTUS can release anything that goes against national security and that includes the full JFK files. Who killed him and why are as above top secret as what was recovered at Roswell in 1947. Only...
