Is it really that heinous of a word?? I’ve always viewed “retard” on the same level as “douchebag”…

Uh. Yeah, it is. How would you feel if you were neurodiverse, or your sibling was, and people threw that word around you? It’s not too different from using the ‘N’ word.

What’s sad is how too much of the world doesn’t already know that.

    Talking

It is quite a story. Sammy talks about meeting Ed and them both saying how much they miss each other in his dream. Then they started working on new music in Ed's room. Then suddenly he realized that Ed is no longer alive, and he woke up! But he remembered Ed's guitar playing in the dream. He said Satriani was able to replicate it well, since Joe has really studied how Ed plays the past year, he said Joe is like a Scholar.

FWIW, and without personally knowing the man, Joe Satriani seems like a genuinely good guy and is obviously a talented musician and guitarist - although he and Vai tend to write music I will rarely listen to. I say that to say I have a lot of admiration for what he volunteered to do of late - playing a role without being a slavish imitation of one of the recent history's most recognizable and imitable figures, EVH. Satch is one of the few that could do so with honor and integrity.

With that preface - overall, I was surprised that I liked the new song. Personally, I could have done without the tapping intro and the other tapping run. Day by day I seem to get more bothered that EVH is almost solely identified by that technique. Sure, he popularized its usage (without claiming to have "invented" the technique), and sure, it was a technique that made notable appearances on most every album - but that technique gets so much attention that I think it often obscures the talent of the musician and the full body of work that should be honored.

It is a minor nit to pick - again, overall, the new song is a good jam. The predominant quantity of the guitar parts (e.g., non-tapping) are well done, pays homage to EVH, and fits the tonality and theme of the song. Well done SH and Satch. I'll learn to live with the tapping.

Kenny’s drumming was mentioned earlier and I have to say it really does bug me. I know the guy is considered a good drummer but something about the way he plays just doesn’t feel right. I remember seeing him with chickenfoot and felt the same way.

But still it’s not his fault. The song is just boring. But then again I admire the fact that Sam even has the fire to write and put out a song at his age. I’d be retired in Cabo making paper airplanes out of all my cash if I was him. So good for him.

Late to the party on this, but I have to say I liked this song a lot. Best thing Hagar has done in quite a while IMO. Satch's work also homage to Eddie but it is still Satch!

This is in no way a knock on Sam at all, but it wouldn't shock me if the riff Sam dreamt actually did happen. Again not a knock, more of a potential understanding of how dreams work. We have so many experiences stored up there that we only have access to when sleeping. Just wouldn't shock me if this was an actual Ed riff from 30 years ago. Nothing wrong with it either. Just a thought

The reason why so many people do the tapping stuff to "pay tribute" to Eddie is because they can't do the other stuff that made Eddie great. I mean come on, the tapping part is the easiest part of Eruption. LoL Seriously, I can do that part. But the other things, the timing, the rhythm playing, the chords he used (mainly his use of triad chords), the intricate riffs he came up with for the verses. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. No one else could do those things like Eddie--not even Joe Satriani. I'm not putting down Satriani--he's a great virtuoso player and I own a lot of his albums--but even he said in an interview that Eddie did stuff that no one else would even think of attempting, but it sounded amazing.

I just don't like it when Sammy hypes up Satriani saying that he nailed Eddie's playing perfectly. No he didn't. Satriani nailed Satriani perfectly and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I really liked Satriani's interpretations of Van Halen songs on that Hagar tour. Just don't tell me that he's playing like Eddie, because he's not. No one can.

I like the reason why Sammy wrote the song more than the song itself. Like all of us, he clearly loved Eddie and misses him.

I wouldn't doubt if Sammy has said the same about Vic Johnson nailing everything that EVH ever did. He does tend to go overboard with his praises.

It's ok. I'll give it a few more listens. Seems like Satch is giving the bigger tribute here with a strong nod to EVH in the guitar playing (the tapping and the blazing solo).

Not a big Aronoff fan, so the drums were not a concern for me--especially given that this was more about the guitar and the lyrics. But, I agree with others that I would've preferred Chad or Jason behind the kit for this tune.

Usually tributes songs are slower and more emotional. Kind of cool that this is upbeat and heavier.
