Yeah, I don’t know why some people use those stupid things. Unless you have some massive wrist trouble there’s no reason to be using that. Not to mention it locks your wrist in a position that isn’t necessarily how you want to release the ball anyway. Now they’re completely illegal on the PBA tour.

I know a lot of times women will use them because they don’t quite have the same strength in their wrist, and I understand that.

This guy was an engineer and seriously made it in his garage. Was the biggest brace you ever seen. Almost went to his elbow. He would throw the ball in the channel make a tweak and go "yep I got it now" Then proceed to throw it across the lane into the other gutter.

I am envious of how good you are at bowling. I bowled for 20 years and I think my best season was about 172.

Lol. That’s funny. I never understood why guys use those big fucking contraptions.

Well, I put in a lot of time when I was younger. I bowled so many games and so many tournaments in so many different situations, you just wind up getting good just based on that. It’s hard to get a lot better if you’re just bowling league once a week.

I certainly can’t put in the practice time anymore like I did when I was younger. But I also think it’s easier to score now than it used to be.

    And there’s nothing wrong with averaging 172. I did….

when I was 14. Lol I’m just fucking with you.

Hey, we all gotta start somewhere. So one of my friends found this. This was our bowling league that we used to do after school in junior high. This is from 1983 so I was 12. Look at that average. Haha.

Do you feel like it’s kinda like riding a bike? In that once you are good at it, you’re always gonna be good at it?

I suppose the answer is yes considering I’m pretty much back to the average I had when I stopped 17 years ago. Again, I do think it is easier to score now than it used to be, but in terms of my physical ability, it came back pretty fast.

In some ways, I’m actually bowling better now at 54 than I was at 37. At no point in my life did I throw a 300 a couple weeks apart from each other. I’ve never done that until last week. And I’ve certainly never thrown three in a stretch of a few months. Maybe some of that is the game is easier, or maybe I’m just more accurate as I’ve gotten older.

I imagine your patience is a lot better now as well. And not getting frustrated as easily. I play golf and that’s the one damn thing I get frustrated doing. But the last few times I’ve played, I’ve noticed I’m not such a hothead. So maybe maturity and wisdom helps too.

Oh my attitude is much better now. I don’t get nearly as angry when I throw a split or don’t throw a great shot. I think maybe that’s just a sign of maturity more than anything. But yeah I don’t let one shot bother me like I used to when I was younger. I’m getting a lot more enjoyment out of it now. It’s just supposed to be fun, I’m not trying to make a career of it anymore. So maybe that’s part of it.

Exactly. When a hobby starts feeling like work, I examine why I lived it to begin with.

I mean, that’s a big reason I quit to begin was that I made it to be a job even then. By the time I was in my late 30s, I wasn’t trying to be on tour anymore, but I still treated the game like I was, and it made it really unenjoyable.

But since I’ve gotten back into it, I’ve really enjoyed it and I found out that I really missed it. I threw away a lot of years.

    Default Bowling Advice

This is my Tuesday league, the one I keep shooting 300 in. I actually bowled really bad last week and lowered my average a couple pins. I jacked up my back somehow and I probably shouldn’t have bowled, but I took a bunch of Aleve and just gutted it out.

The guy on my team who averages 228 is 73 years old. That’s how fucking good he is. And this is like one of his worst seasons ever. He usually averages anywhere from 235 to 240. In his 70’s!

It appears that your “bad”, is better than some folk’s “best”.

There’s a lot of really good bowlers in this league. I think I’m probably fifth in average. This is the league that Mookie Betts will sub in when he’s not obviously playing baseball.
