Hey folks, I'm new to this forum, and in browsing I noticed someone pointed out that the 25th anniversary of Van Halen I is coming this February. I've listened to thousands of records in my life and I am proud to say that I still consider VH1 (not the video channel!) to be the single most influential album I've heard.
Anyway, I would love to join in the wishful thinking—that this occasion would be the perfect time to unveil some new music from VH. Got me to thinking... in 1996 when the band put out the controversial (between Sammy and the rest) Greatest Hits record, I wondered why it was called Greatest Hits Volume 1. Surely that implies a Volume 2 is bound to come sometime? Maybe this has been covered somewhere else on the site, but I am not aware.
This would be a great time to unveil a Volume 2 (if only they had a record label, that is). It could present the songs that didn't make it to the first compilation that were also hits but some cult fan favorites, as well. And the end of the disc could throw the fans a couple of bones — some unreleased stuff, like one of the tunes recorded with DLR that he deemed such tremendous stuff, or one of the three albums' worth of instrumentals Eddie has worked on these past years. It could be a good way to get VH back in the public mind when and if they are prepared to unveil a new phase of the band.
Here's my idea of what GH Volume 2 could look like:
1. Jamie's Cryin'
2. On Fire
3. Beautiful Girls
4. Somebody Get Me a Doctor
5. Everybody Wants Some
6. Romeo Delight
7. Mean Street
8. Intruder / (Oh) Pretty Woman
9. Hot for Teacher
10. Summer Nights
11. Cabo Wabo
12. Finish What Ya Started
13. Runaround
14. Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)
15. Feelin'
16. From Afar
17. Unreleased
18. Unreleased
Yeah, I'm even going to represent the Gary Cherone era with their best song from VH3, imo. It's tough to narrow it down and compromise—I'd like to see Judgment Day over Runaround, and I bet they'd take Love Walks In over Summer Nights, etc. And I added an extra track, too, so sue me.
But I'd like to hear what other folks think of the idea in theory and what songs they'd put on a Volume 2. Thanks.

planetonamor,
Welcome! I hope you get a lot of response, but this topic has been hashed out quite a few times.
For myself, I would rather see a cleaned version of the WB demos and many of the live pre-signing performances that abound, sort of their version of the Beatles Anthology albums that trace the history of the bands early days.

I'd prefer two new studio releases from Van Halen plus a double box set of Live performances from all 3 eras or 4...
Before we see another BOV2... All the songs you guys listed are great but I've got all that already on vinyl, CD's and remastered CD's...
I want more meat before they throw us a recycled snack with a couple of new tracks on it...Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...

There's alot of great songs on III. A Year To The Day, Dirty Water Dog, One I Want. It's definitely a departure from the Halen I know and love but hey shit happens. Overall, after I actually sat down and LISTENED to it a couple times I found it to be a rather decent cd. My only bitch is that Mike's backround vox are more present and that to me is what makes it fall alittle short.
Personally over any box sets or GH's comps I'd like them to get Ralph Sanez and record a new record and tour.
For a while I hoped for a Dave or Sammy reunion but being realistic that just isn't going to happen.
But as always I'm sure most VH fans would have a hard time with that.Know Ralph
Know Van Halen

No Ralph
No Van Halen

Although those are some of the best VH tunes not on a greatest hits allready, I think they would probably be singles that were released.

Instead of unreleased material, bring back Sammy for 2 new tunes the way same way Dave was brought back.
This would get boys working with Sammy again without Sam actually being 'in' Van Halen.
Then they could all figure out if they want to work with each other again.Better use it up before it gets old!

Need these Sammy tunes...
"Best of Both Worlds"
"Love Walks In" (You may hate it, I love it)
"Top of the World"
Obviously "Hot For Teacher" was the most glaring Roth ommission from Volume #1.

Greatestit Hits Vol 2 would be a idea if done right, 7 Dave/7 Sam/2 Gary and some unreleased stuff, like those "apparent Dave tunes" from a few years back and that one Sammy tune that was incredible according to Faiburn,They could make a good compilation..

Based on the songs chosen and the format of "Best Of Volume I," Volume II should definitely be:
1. YOU REALLY GOT ME
2. JAMIE'S CRYIN'
3. ICE CREAM MAN
4. BEAUTIFUL GIRLS
5. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!
6. (OH) PRETTY WOMAN
7. HOT FOR TEACHER
8. I'LL WAIT
9. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
1O. LOVE WALKS IN
11. FINISH WHAT YA STARTED
12. TOP OF THE WORLD
13. DON'T TELL ME (WHAT LOVE CAN DO)
14. WITHOUT YOU
15. FIRE IN THE HOLE
16. ONCE
17. *NEW SONG*
These aren't all my favorites and all of their singles and radio hits, but are the rest of their "best and biggest" songs. It should've been a double-disc the first time with one representing each era obviously. And for "Video Hits Volume II":
1. ERUPTION (music video)
2. YOU REALLY GOT ME (music video)
3. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL (music video)
4. JAMIE'S CRYIN' (music video)
5. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY (live)
6. BOTTOMS UP! (live)
7. AND THE CRADLE WILL ROCK... (European TV promo--gotta have something from '80)
8. MEAN STREET (I think they made a music video for this song (see "The Inside" issue #1))
9. UNCHAINED (live)
10. (OH) PRETTY WOMAN (music video with "Intruder")
11. AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE (live Us Festival)
12. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE (live "LWAN")
13. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS (live "LWAN")
14. TOP OF THE WORLD (a combo of the three versions plus "L:RH,RN.")
15. AMSTERDAM (music video)
16. WITHOUT YOU (music video)
17. FIRE IN THE HOLE (music video)
18. ONCE (music video)
...not that they'll ever do it this way. I should be their advisor. I'll tell you what though--if I was, after this was released we'd get all kinds of unreleased demos and live footage from every tour audio and video! I would be a fuckin' hero.VH FOREVER!!!!!!!

Well, the only way I'll buy another "Greatest Hits/Best of" album is that if there is new material on it. I have a CD burner. A lot of poeple have them. And, like a lot of people, I've made countless "Greatest Hits/Best of CDs". Why do I need another?
