"Custom Shop" = unaffordable to anyone but collectors that will probably just display them in their living rooms.

The Green Custom Shop Wolfgang, in the Music Zoo video I posted, has the Gibson Speed knobs and the square pickup ears as well.

As far as I know it’s just aesthetic but just not sure why they’d make that change. Then again Fender is a big corporation so they probably had some focus group that said square routes offer better “synergy” with their “target market” and “team culture”.

Purely aesthetic for me, I don't like big bulky square routes. I liked that the lower end models matched the Wolfgang's unique pickup routes. I constantly see people complaining that it's difficult to swap pickups in these though, so maybe they're changing this on the Standards to help appeal to the market that's modding these.

I don't know man. That sounds way too considerate of what the customers actually want to be the reason. haha.

He mentions they squared off the pickup route to make it easier to install different pickups...

But looking at it again…the baseplate routes still wouldn’t fit a DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan’s square baseplate. So people will still have to route to install new pickups

He said "If you want to put a Frankenstein pickup in it". Maybe those fit? Idk... I don't think I've ever replaced a pickup in a guitar... It is what it is... I just tweaked gain/eq to get where I wanted to be. Lol

Not a fan of the fine tuners without a locking nut on the Specials... I had a Chinese and a Japanese special years ago and really liked the fine tuning bridge with a locking nut. Seems sorta useless with a regular nut.. IDK... If I got one, I'd get the Standard for half the price anyway... For some reason I always liked my Standard more than the Specials I owned.
