    Figure of speech.

HIs tone changed from album to album. However until he had 5150, he couldn't spent hours upon hours in the studio working on tone. About the only time we heard of him doing a lot of studio time was working with Donn on the FW solos. That was the only time you heard of him spending hours and that was really coming up with solos that Ted would like.

Once 5150 was working, sure but spending time in the studio working on a tone costs money and I can't recall any discussions of albums 1-5 where they were doing quite a bit. I know he spent time prior to VH1 on this tone but he reallyl just used the live set up. Did that up until FW when the Eventide was introduced.

Anyway regardless people today spend more time on his tone than he ever did. I would be he set his gear up in the studio, got a decent tone and that was it. Didn't spend a week dialing it in. I could be wrong but I have not read anything that indicated that

When I was getting hammered because I didn't think Joe was the right guy to represent ED's music you asked me who I thought would have been better and I said Zappa and Steve Stevens. And you didn't have anything good to say about Zappa. That's what I mean.

Yeah, nothing has changed for me. Still not a guy I would pay to see. Whether he can play this song or not is irrelevant. And by the way touring with Sam would’ve required him to play 99% Sam era material. And I’ve never heard Dweezil even attempt any of those songs. I’m not even sure he likes that era of Van Halen, let alone want to play any of it. He’s a Dave era guy.

You need someone up on stage with a presence, and Dweezil has zero. It's not just about whether you can play the material, there are boatload of people that can play the songs.

Satch is a substantial artist in his own right. Dweezil is a guy with some Van Halen ties that can play well. There is a huge difference. Saying Dweezil would have been a bad choice doesn't correlate to him not having the chops.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Eddie’s an other worldly genius. I know I’m stating the obvious but the technical difficulty of this solo which was kinda of a throwaway song in that they never even played it live is mind numbing to me.

It also wasn’t lost on me that the version that came closest to me had three guitars playing. Gene said this a lot but he really did have that gift of making one guitar sound like many. Who else of the greats can we say that about?

Tone is still way off in that clip. But at least he trying!

I think the other side of the coin for this song is Dave's bluesy singing style for this piece. Can't think of too many singers that could do it justice. The cover will sound bad even if the guitar parts are nearly dialed in without the vocals being close as well.

Nature's intent is neither food, nor drink, nor clothing, nor comfort, nor anything else in which God is left out.

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen
