Default Dweezil Zappa Names Favorite Eddie Van Halen Solo: 'They Never Played That Song Live'

Dweezil Zappa Names Favorite Eddie Van Halen Solo: 'They Never Played That Song Live'

"Van Halen never played that song live."

For those attending Dweezil Zappa's Rox(postroph)y Tour, you are in for a special evening of tunes from two classic Frank Zappa LPs that are celebrating 50 years since their original release: 'Apostrophe' and 'Roxy & Elsewhere.'

However, there are also some special surprises included in these performances.

During a chat with KLPX, Dweezil unveiled a somewhat obscure Van Halen tune that he and his band are performing at these shows.

And also, how it was his favorite Eddie Van Halen solo as a youngster.

"One of the other things that's a complete detour is I'm playing the song 'Push Comes to Shove' from Van Halen's 'Fair Warning' album," Zappa said (transcribed by Ultimate Guitar).

"Because as a 12-year-old kid, it was my favorite guitar solo that I had ever heard, and Van Halen never played that song live."

"So I thought, 'Well, we're doing these other things that are kind of a first, why not just play something that I really enjoy and have people get a chance to hear it in a live situation?'"

Additionally, Dweezil recounted that around the same time that "Push Comes to Shove" became a personal favorite, he also had the opportunity to meet the man himself and how they soon worked together.

"As a kid, when I was 12, the very first thing that I ever recorded in the studio ended up being produced by Edward Van Halen, who randomly had called our house because he wanted to talk to my dad because he was building the 5150 studio at his house."

"And my dad had built the Utility Muffin Research Studio at our house, and he wanted to come see the studio to get some tips on what he should be looking out for when building his own studio.

So then, only a few weeks after that, I ended up working with him, producing this record. These two songs, called 'My Mother Is a Space Cadet' [and 'Crunchy Water']."

Finally you post a video worth watching, bodhi.

While I applaud dweezil’s ambition, especially concerning my third favorite VH song of all time, I think PCTS is likely a track not replicable by anyone. Uniquely Ed, uniquely fair warning. Nobody is gonna be able to render that tone properly. I’d be impressed if so.

Great tune, one of my favorite solos from Ed as well.

Sounded pretty close in the beginning of the clip. The tone during the last part kind of reminded me of the Summer Nights intro tone. Which of course is another great tune but the tone is a little brighter to my ears. The Fair Warning tone is deeper with more torque and sustain to my ears. He will get it together I’m sure.

Most of these EVH synchophants usually just think everything is all about Edward but there’s so much more going on with the music especially with this particular tune. The singer will be an annoying distraction.

I don’t think the tone he’s using is even close.

I have no idea. I guess he’s trying to come close to the album tone he said. Well, he’s not close.

Will be awesome to hear PCTS live...

Hardest song to play (on guitar) in the entire VH catalog IMO.. By a mile.

The entire song, not just the solo.

Its a shame it wasn't played on the last tour. I think Roth's vocals would of been fine with this one...

Thanks, Dweezil... appreciate all the effort. It doesn't have to be Ed perfect.

Man, that singer is terrible. Not a good fit for the song at all. There’s probably nobody that can sing it the way Dave did, but this guy is nowhere near the ballpark.

I’m sure Dweez will get there, he seems like a perfectionist.

Doug Steele does a pretty good version, and lesson, of the solo here:

I give Dweezil credit for giving that tune some love.

Yeah, the tone's not quite there--doubt it'll ever be exact--but good on him for the effort.
