I've said it several times; ADKOT was mixed and mastered for mp3's and ear buds.

It will sound the least egregious that way.

Dave didn't want to make the effort to patch things up with Ted Templeman, so a huge opportunity was missed. Ted came out of retirement to do the Doobies' 2010 record. He could've done ADKOT.

That would have been really cool if he did produce ADKOT.

Default Michael Anthony Hints That Chickenfoot Will Be Releasing New Music Soon

VH sounded their best on record when they had people around them (producers/engineers) who were capable of telling them, “No.”

Once the Yes Men were brought in (Post, Shanks, Hogarth, etc) their sound took a hit. Mike Post and John Shanks are both competent and quality producers.

But they were probably told from the get go, “Your job is to get us what we want. If you’re not on board, we’ll find someone who is.”

    “We” meaning Ed.

You think Fairbairn would have let ADKOT come out sounding the way it did? With the guitars sounds like a chainsaw? The bass being all distorted? And Dave’s vocals virtually untouched sounding like he was singing right in your fucking ear?

    No chance.

Yep. Happens to a lot of bands, that's why pretty much all older bands, their fans always say "Their early stuff is the best". And it's often true.

And the reason is, when they're recording their "early stuff", they are under contract with the record company, who assigns them a producer and he is calling the shots. And professional music producers know more than any band member does, especially new bands that have never really recorded before.

So many times the band is chafing under the producer's management, and can't wait until they can do it "the way they want it".

Then they go through a contract or two, and are now older, many records/tours under their belts, and have "go to hell" money. So they are in charge of their own recordings. The smart ones still get a producer, maybe they had one over the years that they liked, and let him do his thing.

Then there's Van Halen. Hires yes men as producers and we get VH3 and ADKOT. Ted Templeman and Donn Landee would have never allowed those records to come out sounding like that. They probably would have "urged" the band to maybe replace a few of the 'lesser' tunes, as well.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Initially, VH went "route #1" and got Andy Johns, Bruce Fairbairn and Glenn Ballard. Then things went south.

I like the Jack Black explanation. "most bands only have so much sauce in the bottle."

True. But ADKOT could have sounded immaculate.

Ed’s hearing just changed and he craved that raw unprocessed tone over time and unfortunately his amps didn’t sound that good into the mic.

He was playing through heavy metal, heavily saturated amplifiers that allowed him to get the harmonics and gain with ease.

There isn’t a chance in hell Ed could have played through the Holy Grail Marshall in 2012. It took a unique touch and sensibility to make that amp sing.

His tastes changed. But a good producer could've still made it work.
Ed has a different sound on FUCK, but to my ears, it still sounds good. Different, but good.

I often wonder if Ed intentionally went with his ADKOT tone, to appeal to the “Metal” crowd. It seems, a lot of Metal players were the guys buying his EVH amps.

My personal belief is Edward's tone was impacted by his hearing. All of them have absolutely shit hearing. The songs sounded way better live. The recording was ridiculously over compressed, and it made tone muddled, I feel.

Remember ADKOT was so brickwalled it got Dave and Edward to actually agree last minute to remix at 5150. I think they would of re-recorded many parts if the tour wasn't being booked. The album needed space to allow the parts to show instead its brickwalled and hives ear fatigue.
