Elon Musk weighs in on health care costs amid insurance scrutiny

Billionaire Elon Musk on Thursday weighed in on the cost of health care in the U.S., questioning the value Americans get for the coverage they receive.

"Shouldn’t the American people be getting their money’s worth?" Musk, who was tapped to co-lead the incoming-Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, replied to a post on X.

His comment was in response to a post highlighting data from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation that says that the U.S. has the highest health care admin costs (per capita) compared to OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries.

According to the Peter Peterson Foundation, the U.S. spends over $1,000 per person on administrative costs, which is almost five times more than the average of other wealthy countries. It is also more than it spends on long-term health care.

In 2022, the U.S. spent an estimated $12,742 per person on health care, marking the highest health care costs per capita across similar countries, according to the foundation.

The comments come as law enforcement continues to search for the person who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel early Wednesday, in what police say was a targeted attack.

The dems are screaming really loudly about cutting Gov spending. Their defensive posture on this says it all.

People are totally misunderstanding this Politico-USAID story. First of all, all of this information was on USSpending.gov.

This story involves Politico Pro which does not equal Politico.com. Politico Pro is a premium service with dashboards, legislative tracking and analysis, votes, lawsuits, etc. It costs several grand per year. Corporations, lawmakers, and agencies subscribe for valuable information.

USAID paid Politico Pro $44,000 over two years for their E&E trade publication. Not only is that it, it's normal.

The other government money was from stuff like, even though her office is calling it part of the Deep State, Lauren Bobert's office is, itself, paying for a Politico Pro subscription. That's public knowledge. These are standard subscriptions for useful Information.

I am going to side on the fence I was a decade or two when Ron Paul was cool. The government should be audited. I don't have access to the ledgers so can't trust anybody however if given the choice of two options

I will be pick the former. Yes there will be misinformatioin but now the Government is 100% efficient with no waste, no bribes, kickbacks, laundering, etc Everybody has bitched about waste and fraud. Now when its done its a bad thing cause of the guy in charge.

Yes simplistic approach but I can''t imagine every story about waste and improper use of government funds or the actual purpose of USAID is erroneous. Not after what I have seen of other pure Government agencies over the years.

Just because one hates the messenger doesn't mean the news is inaccurate. On both sides. The most vocal critics are the ones that said to hire 88k IRS agents.

But when everything being cut is called a left-wing wasteful, evil institution, it does make one wonder just how politicized things will be. How far is the pendulum going to swing the other way now? And will it be for the best. Is one corruption being cleaned out only to be replaced with a new one for the "radical right?"

All I said was that this particular story is being blown way out of proportion because people are connecting it to USAID and Politico when it's something different.

Nothing I said was untrue. Politico Pro is something different, and it's something that's subscribed to for legit reasons by all kinds of people and entities in Washington, including Republicans.

You're the ones turning this into somehow hating the messenger or saying "everything is fine."

Elon Musk is an intelligent guy with a mixed bag of views. That doesn't mean he's infallible when it comes to auditing the government. This is a tiny, tiny sliver of money and a nothingburger of a subscription that people in Washington sensibly subscribe to.

How can you look at what’s being uncovered as a left or right issue? To do so would be politicization.

Bill Ackman on DOGE


I think we can all agree on a few things:

We have $36 trillion of national debt growing at a rapid rate, that must be refinanced and issued at a materially higher interest rate as our bonds come due and as new funds are needed.

We had a $1.8 trillion deficit in fiscal 2024.

There is an enormous amount of fraud, waste, and inappropriate spending in our government budget.

It is illegal and/or otherwise should not be permitted for our government to fund activities that it cannot do directly through NGOs and other non-profits.

President Trump announced during his campaign that Elon would be appointed to oversee

. In other words, the American people voted for and signed up for DOGE and Elon as its leader.

We are extremely fortunate to have one of our greatest business leaders and entrepreneurs devote a considerable amount of his limited time for free to help our country.

We are extremely fortunate that some of our most talented young people have signed on to help DOGE succeed.

DOGE is just getting started and has already identified a massive amount of waste and likely fraud, and has begun cutting a material amount of costs.

It is axiomatic that those who are beneficiaries of waste, fraud and unnecessary government spending will be the most threatened by the cuts that DOGE is making in these programs. These beneficiaries of waste and fraud are also extremely worried about the reputational, legal and potential criminal risk they will suffer by being exposed by DOGE.

The beneficiaries of government waste, fraud and inappropriate spending will protest loudly and state false reasons for why DOGE must be stopped because their careers and livelihoods are threatened and put at risk by DOGE’s success. I have seen this movie many times before, but in the corporate world.

The president has stated clearly that he is overseeing DOGE’s activities and that no important decisions will be made without his consent.

Our legal system will ensure that no laws are broken as DOGE executes on its important mission.

Other efforts over the last many decades to eliminate government waste and fraud have totally failed.

DOGE is our best hope for fixing our fundamentally flawed and highly ineffective bureaucratic system for running our country.

Elon and Trump will face enormous pressure and pushback from those who benefit from the current corrupt system.

All Americans must therefore make their voices heard loud and clear about how much they support DOGE, Elon and our president’s efforts to help our country. We cannot let DOGE fail as our country is rapidly on the path to insolvency.

Let’s not let our country down. Let’s do our part in making sure our Congressmen and Senators know that we are 100% behind the president, Elon and DOGE.

It’s the least we can do.
