Default "Hot For Teacher"-Full Song Transcription!

This was supposed to be an easier one...it wasn't! As with most of my transcriptions, this song took me about 6 months from start until the stopping point I reached after numerous revisions and edits.

And as with most of the transcriptions that I work on, there are details here that have never been included in any previous transcription. The transitions between the loud and quiet parts have been particularly detailed and backed up with all the available live footage available from the Roth reunion tours...these were the only times that Edward actually switched to the neck pickup for the quiet parts as he did when he used the Flying V on the album version of the song. I used the isolated raw mic track (not the Guitar Hero isolated track) for reference. As usual, I have notated the left hand fingerings and right hand picking directions and also the right hand fingers to use while finger plucking the quiet "La Grange" style parts. Eddie did play these parts fingerstyle in a way that differs from what he did on "Little Guitars" for instance.

Please pay close attention to PHRASING in this piece...it is THE most important thing to bear in mind as you work through it.

Here is one thing about the "Hot For Teacher" session that some of you know and that some of you do not know...

Edward recorded "Hot For Teacher" sitting on a stool. This is proven with interview evidence...he specifically stated it to Steven Rosen and at least one other interviewer that I know of. So just imagine Edward sitting on a stool with his vintage Flying V recording this with Al right in eyesight playing along with him!

Man, I really shouldn't have reworked one of those solo licks last month. I've got it a note or two off.

There are a lot of things that I discovered in the song as I set out to transcribe it. In the solo, there are a couple of interesting things that had never been correctly transcribed before…the open string parts especially. That part has a variety of articulations going on in it…silent hammer-ons are mixed in with picked notes and regular hammer-ons and pull-offs in a haphazard way…there’s no discernible pattern really. Look closely at that part because I’ve never seen it notated correctly anywhere. Not that he’s “winging it” per se, he rarely did that, but this does indicate that it is a single continuous take as does the overall swing time of the whole track. As I said before, it is the sound and feel of Alex and Edward going for the take together…as in “I’m the One” most obviously, but also in the vast majority of the catalog!
