Default Van Halen with Sammy Hagar vs...

this might be a stupid thread, but it's kind of based on the comments in the Oasis thread and in some of the other threads of "How does someone who is a Van Halen fan listen to Oasis (or some other band)". But speaking for myself, I like many different types of groups and other than some of the Dead Kennedys stuff, Van Halen might be the hardest rock band in my collection. And I'm also not unafraid to say that when Dave left, so did I. But since being on this site and hearing about the non-Dave years, I broke down and bought those albums several years ago. And while I'm still learning some of the stuff on those albums, I wanted to see how they stacked up against the same type of rock albums I do have from those years. So I'm not comparing them to U2 or INXS or Talking Heads, and I don't really put Cheap Trick, ZZ Top or The Rolling Stones in the same category either. And I don't own stuff like Motley Crue or Iron Maiden or Judas Priest and god forbid Bon Jovi - well, I have two Bon Jovi songs, one of which is a hatchet job on one of my favourite Christmas songs - so there's none of that hear; and I'm leaving Boston out because while I feel they compare, they only released two albums during that period (and not their best two). So we have:

AC/DC - Blow Up Your Video, The Razors Edge, Ballbreaker - truth be told, I didn't get these albums until - was it Sony? - came out with the CD releases maybe 15 years ago now. Typically late period AC/DC - some great songs, some ok songs, some treading water songs. I would say the first two are on par with the Van Halen with Sammy Hagar albums - don't really seek Ballbreaker out when I want to hear some AC/DC

David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em And Smile, Skyscraper, A Little Ain't Enough, Your Filthy Little Mouth - even. I know to some that is sacrilege, but what Van Halen was missing with a songwriter, Dave was missing with a guitarist. Steve Vai just doesn't write a song as well as Edward does and I like Edward's playing better. But Dave still had the chops with words - most of the time. "Hot Dog And A Shake" is an embarrassment. It's like vanilla ice cream and chocolate chips - I like both, but put them together - there you have something.

Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation, Pump, Get A Grip - well, it's not Toys In The Attic, Rocks and Draw The Line. I probably like Pump better than any of the Sammy records, but I don't feel Permanent Vacation has aged all that well and always felt Get A Grip was uneven, so I'd probably at least rather listen to the first three Sammy albums

Def Leppard - Hysteria, Adrenalize, Retro Active - not sure Retro Active should even count as it's not a traditional "let's go in the studio and make an album" album. But I like it. And Hysteria. Adrenalize is the only one that's 50/50 for me (and I'm one of those weirdos that likes "Let's Get Rocked"). Would I rather hear Spanked or Make Love Like A Man? Personal Property or Man On A Mission? Eh - probably Van Halen with Sammy Hagar

Guns 'N Roses - Appetite For Destruction, Use Your Illusion I, Use Your Illusion II, “The Spaghetti Incident?”

I don't count Lies as an album - it's two EPs (for the price of one!) Oh, what could've been. Guns 'N Roses was like a fireworks show where they just blow off everything at the end. I know some people think the "Illusions" have too much filler, but most albums have filler and if they'd spread those two records over three (and spaced 'em out time wise), what you feel is filler would be less noticeable. But they didn't. "The Spaghetti Incident?" is a box of firecrackers someone found after the show was over and lit 'em off. Still, edge to Guns 'N Roses

KISS - Crazy Nights, Hot In The Shade, Revenge - again, to be honest, I'd given up on KISS at this point, the last album I got at the time was Asylum. Just thought they were trying to be too much like Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. But again, picked these albums up several years ago and actually, not a bad period for them. Not '70s KISS though. I maybe have to give Van Halen with Sammy Hagar the nod (again, mainly on the strength of their first three albums) but not by as much as some people would like

again, a stupid thread and just my thoughts, and now it can sink to the bottom of the forum where it belongs, lol

It's a non-issue, really. This board has threads dedicated to The Eagles, The Cars, Grand Funk, Prince, Duran Duran, Billie Eillish, Blondie and they're a million times softer than Oasis, who are a pretty rocking band in their own right even without comparison to this lot. yet a VH fan liking Oasis supposedly causes sideways looks?

Some people just have a stick up their bum about Oasis for their own strange reasons.

    Bon Jovi
Released their 3 albums around the same time VH released theirs.

Slippery and Jersey blow all VH away. Faith loses to FUCK by a smidge.

    Poison
LWTCDI comes a distant last but OUASA holds well, higher than 5150, equal to FUCK, lower than OU812.

    Judas Priest
Turbo and Ram It Down reign supreme though Painkiller loses to all 3 Sam Halen albums.

    Ozzy
The Ozzmeister comes some way last with The Ultimate Sin but comes first with No More Tears.

    Cinderella
Night Songs just pipped by 5150, Long Cold Winter beats FUCK and ties with OU812.

    Skid Row
Slave is beaten by all 3 VH albums but Skid Row leaves them all trailing in its dust.

    Whitesnake
Slip ties with OU812 but 1987 is alongside Skid Row, leaving all of Van Hagar in the rear-view mirror.

Judging by your participation in the Ghost and Oasis threads we both know you won't be able to resist.

Two diamond albums, one triple diamond and recognised as an all-time great, so not really a shock outcome.

OK. The tournament where Bon Jovi and Poison face off with Van Halen doesn't exist.

None of the lower 48 states will give a license for this fight to take place, in any sport. It would be deemed a cultural crime, an affront to the arts, a desecration of good taste beyond what is tolerable.

    The audacity!

Good way to frame this thread. I left out a lot of favs that *could* fall into this category, especially for the 90's because the bands could be considered punk, alt rock, industrial or whatever (like U2, Nirvana, Oasis, etc). I tried to stick with simply rock/hard rock/metal. Hence, 1995, there was really not a lot of hard rock/metal releases and none I consider to beat Balance despite not being my favorite Sammy era album. My picks:

    1986 5150 vs.
David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em And Smile
    Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time
    Ozzy - Ultimate Sin
    Motorhead - Orgasmatron

    1988 OU812 vs.
Metallica - And Justice For All
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
AC/DC - Blow Up Your Video
Ozzy - No Rest For The Wicked
    Cinderella - Long Cold Winter
    Yngwie Malmsteen - Odyssey

    1991 FUCK vs.
    Guns n Roses Use Your Illusion 1 & 2
    Metallica - Black Album
    Pearl Jam - Ten
    The Cult - Ceremony
    Motorhead - 1916
    Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
    Ozzy - No More Tears

    1995 Balance vs
    No contenders.

I will never understand the Bon Jovi boners on this site. I throw them in with the bands in which I don't see why people like them: Bon Jovi, Oasis, Springsteen, and Dave Matthews Band are in my "why are they popular, they suck" box.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

    Thumbs up

Van Halen with Sammy Hagar vs...

1 - AC/DC - Blow Up Your Video, The Razors Edge, Ballbreaker. AC/DC for me.

2 - David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em And Smile, Skyscraper, A Little Ain't Enough, Your Filthy Little Mouth - Dave, for sure.

3 - Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation, Pump, Get A Grip - Van hagar.

4 - Def Leppard - Hysteria, Adrenalize, Retro Active - Van hagar. I enjoy Hysteria A LOT. The other 02 records from The Leps I never got into.

5 - Guns 'N Roses - Appetite For Destruction, Use Your Illusion I, Use Your Illusion II, “The Spaghetti Incident?” - Van hagar. Appetite is a classic, a hell of a killer Hard Rock album. The other 03 are just fine, ok at least.

6 - Kiss - Crazy Nights, Hot In The Shade, Revenge - Van Hagar, though I like Revenge. Shade has some good tunes, but Crazy Nights is just another contract record they had to release.

I guess not only the year, but the records/band/attitude/the whole stuff.
I like Van hagar, but this love is not even close to the passion I have for CVH.

And Van hagar won 04 times using my previous post as a parameter.

Production plays a huge part for me. I'd rank 5150 (and VH2) higher if better produced and Ed didn't have such a poor, over-processed sound.
