I prefer the natural blues based stuff he did in the late 70's and early 80's but the guy always had a huge voice. The hair metal stuff was commercially successful but less authentic. Great stuff from Sykes and DC's vocals on Crying in the Rain were unbelievable.

I separate Whitesnake from all the other Hair Metal bands because Coverdale had such a long history in music by the time he struck gold in the US again.
a lot of bands/artists got stuck in the glam metal thing just like by 1980 pretty much everyone, including rock bands, had some disco songs. Heck, Judas Priest (Turbo era) Scorpions, even Ozzy, poofed their hair and put on makeup. I always felt like if they had a tougher name and you never saw how they dressed, Cinderella would seem like they were closer to AC/DC than to Bon Jovi & Poison. MTV made and also ruined a lot of those groups.

Cinderella was the AC/DC of hair bands. Good call.

Hell ... Coverdale even did a disco/funk-type song called Celebration on his first solo album in 77. I think the reason the Hair Metal thing is so tarnished was because of Grunge. Similar to how British Punk had so much contempt for progressive rock. The funny thing is the grunge trend basically died off by 1994/95. Sort of like how Punk flamed out really quickly. The influence both had on the music trends outlasted the actual music (punk became post punk and new wave, Grunge morphed into a decade of guitar based mid-tempo rock songs).

Back on topic and then a tangent. Listened to the episode yesterday. Wolf is Wolf. I'm indifferent. One thing that bugs with those that have suffered some form of trauma, it's a recent trend for those who experienced a loss or tramatic event identify with it impetuity. It becomes what they identify with long term. It bugs me that many of these folks don't ever move beyond it. I see it in kids often (I'm a high school principal). These students become the "trauma" kids. They call themselves that. We need to find a way for people like Wolf and others to speak to moving more beyond it and have a more positive outcome for mental health.

    I agree 1000%.

Then again, our fathers weren't EVH ( a pretty big influence on a young life), and he's an only child who was/is spoiled and indulged on a level us normal people can't comprehend.

I know what you're saying tho.

Wife dragged me to an 80's hair metal show about 20 years ago or so. I think it was Slaughter, Dokken, Cinderella and Poison.

Dokken was pretty good, think Reb Beach was on guitar at that point.

Cinderella was actually really damn good. Singer's voice was still great, and they sounded good.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I think one thing that must be tough for Wolf is when you end up doing something like your father did for a living and you have no way to share it with them. This goes for anyone that follows in the footsteps of a parent. Alex has two sons but neither one of them play drums. I'm sure their loss will be tremendous when that time comes but it won't be like it is with Wolf getting to share the music part with Edward. I really do hope that Wolf maintains a strong relationship with Alex as he is the one guy in his life that knows his father better than anyone.

I have played drums since I was 12 (I'm 53 now) and my dad was an Attorney most all of his life. He doesn't have a music bone in his body. I still love him the same but I can only imagine the extra connection we might have had if he had played drums all of his life. I also know that I was fortunate to grow up with good parents that did not have substance abuse issues or any other things like that going on. Considering the stuff Wolf grew up around, it really is kind of surprising that he does not drink or have an addiction to cigarettes. Hell I'm sure he spent a lot of years inside 5150 with both Alex and Edward smoking.

Well, he certainly does have an addiction that will put him in an early grave if he doesn't get a handle on it.

I agree that his addiction to buying clothes from Goodwill will be his downfall.
