No, he doesn't. Not great. Serviceable for his age. Mick doesn't great. Daltrey doesn't sound like he's in his 20s.

Nobody in their 80's sounds amazing.
Great and amazing are two different things. To me the whole presentation works vocally. And Sammy's moving on stage. They work around their limitations to present something still valid musically.
Frankly, Van Halen could've done this around Roth and didn't. Some VH shows, when Dave was still in his late 50s sounded like crap, and it was like VH told him "you're on your own pal, we don't care." Even worse "we'll release a live record with your shit vocal performances." Sam's doing it right, there's some thinking behind this show.

To be fair, Sammy and Mick have pretty incredible pipes to sound as good as they do at 80. So does Macca, and Daltrey, and Plant. Steven Tyler still sounds pretty good.

Conversely, other singers have not fared as well. Vince Neil. Joe Elliot. Brian Johnson. Axl Rose. Ozzy. Klaus Meine. DLR.

It's a crapshoot, entirely dependent on luck, lifestyle, or genetics.
Joe Eilliot sounds alright IMO. He doesn't have the power he used to obviously but he pulls it off. Def Leppard is a great band IMO. Their best years were with Steve Clark but their live show is still good.

Stephen Pearcy sounds like total shit now. He was never really good live but now it's just awful and his solo band doesn't impress me either. It's a shame too because I used to like Ratt back in the day. I always liked Warren's playing. Talk about a band that was mismanaged and is dysfunctional. They flushed whatever legacy they had right down the fucking toilet.

Man, when I saw Joe sing in 2005, the first and only time I've seen DL, he was just gawd awful. Like completely flat, every song. It was painful to watch. I'd hoped he was just having an off tour, but Fudd said he's kinda lost his range in the oughts.

It happens. I saw them in 2013 and he sounded good, not like 1983 good, but good. I watch YT clips and he sounds decent now. I've heard some rough ones too but it happens.

As for other singers or older bands, when you're sucking most nights, just hang it up. Some of them need the gigs to pay the bills so they keep going passed their expiration date. They never made it to a point where they had "fuck you" money for one reason or another.

I think some of them do it because the fire still burns inside them, whether they're good or not. they just love what they do.

Apparently that's the case with Sam, he certainly has "go to hell" money, and has for a long time but he's never stopped working.

He's put out as many albums from age 50-up (after getting kicked out of VH) as VH has for their career with all singers.

He could sit on the beach in Cabo and never move another muscle if he wanted to, but he's out there at age 76 playing 30 or so shows in the heat of the summer.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

How about enjoy instead of love? For some of us anyway. I don't love too many things but family and my dogs.

Some older acts still do it because they love it. Some still do it because they need the money. Obviously Sam does it because he loves it. We all know he has a shit load of money.

I envy Sam. I probably envy DLR even more if I'm being honest. I don't know what he does in private. I know Sam makes it a point to tell everybody and their mother how philanthropic he is. God bless him. Dave, on the other hand, just doesn't stop. Stop moving. Stop learning. Stop exploring. Stop creating. Stop contemplating. Stop cultivating. The guy goes from the Amazon jungle to the jungle of NYC in an ambulance. He's a fucking chameleon.

Annoying af nonetheless. Small doses for me, but I give him his due. The man loves life. I'm not saying Sam doesn't just that Dave does it without the cocktail and Jimmy Buffet backdrop. More sophisticated if you will.

I wouldn’t call Dave sophisticated, but he certainly marches to the beat of his own drum.
