Default Question about the followup to 3

I've seen a lot of questions asked in interviews with Gary and Mike about the followup to VH3 but I never seen it discussed as to what actually lead them to abandon the followup? For the record I was not a fan of that version of the band and was glad there wasn't a followup but the band seemed all excited about the recording of a new album and were more than half way in before they parted ways. Did the record company intervene? Or was someone able to talk some sense into Eddie? Did they reconnect with Roth at that point for the 2000 sessions? I always wondered why they stopped the followup record and pulled the plug. Who do we have to thank?

Default Question about the followup to 3

I donít know that this warranted an entire topic, but to my understanding, the record company heard the recordings and didnít like them. So I guess Ed just figured it was better to pull the plug at that point because they werenít creating anything that anyone wanted to hear, judging by the fact that the first album didnít sell, and the tour didnít do that well either.

Warner Bros., because they didnít like the new music, also probably said weíre not going to back anything unless you get Dave or Sammy back.

That was what I've heard over the years.

Still would be interested in hearing some of it.

Ironic though if that was the case, because I distinctly remember Gary saying how those follow-up recordings were sounding a lot more like "traditional" Van Halen. It's still so crazy (and a shame) how far removed Ed was musically with the 3 album from all the bands previous albums. Without You and Fire In The Hole were about as close as he got, but even those two tracks were just pretty good, imo.
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne

"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello

"There is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne. Nobody takes that throne. Here's why it's different with Eddie: when a great guitar player passes, you just move on to another, right? But in this case, Eddie wasn't just a 'guitar player'. We're talking about a guy who changed culture and how we play guitar. He was like an alien coming in and fucking everything up so much that even the legends beforehand are like, 'Okay .. what is happening here? What sorcery is this?'" -Nuno Bettencourt

Clearly not traditional enough for what Warner Bros. wanted. And certainly not good enough for Ed to fight for it.

I've always heard that, and I'm sure Gary is a great guy, but I would expect him to say that. I wouldn't take his word for it though. Like Brett said, the record company didn't think so. They nipped that shit in the bud.

I don't think they gave a shit about the content, until they saw the poor sales.

But it didn't. It wasn't just album sales. It was a weak selling tour as well. That's two for two.

I wouldn't mind hearing any leftover material from the Gary era, be it demos or whatnot. Maybe it's good or maybe it's not but it still makes me curious. Hopefully some of it will leak.

I wonder if it was actually a good album, but because the music scene was changing again that Van Halen didn't really have a place as far as WB was concerned outside of being a nostalgic act. Wasn't it said they didn't hear anything that could be a single?

The tour was not successful either. At least by Van Halen standards. Lots of half empty places. Not good.

But the album didnít go double platinum, thatís the whole point. And the reason it didnít sell is because it sucked. And when WB heard the new music, they still thought it sucked.

There was no way the fans were going to run with a third lead singer after all the drama. Even a kick ass record wouldn't have done it.

The Sam Dave thing was too big by then. And how many outfits have had raging success with a third singer fronting? I can't even think of any. Maaaaybe Deep Purple, I guess.

Lol. Deep Purple. Shit, I didnít care about their first two singers lol.

And yes, all the drama from 1996 pretty much ruined any chance of bringing somebody else in no matter who it was. It was Dave or Sammy, and thatís it.

But it didnít help that the album was complete and utter tripe anyway.
