    Default EVH LBX-S

I have been toying with getting one of these for a while, I know there are a ton of reviews out there but has anyone on here got one that is in regular use? I would rather hear opinions from a forum member on these a lot more than the endless YT demos.

I have an LBXii - green and blue channel and it's my favorite amp.

If you want that red channel LBX-S is the one for the money because you get the green & the red.

When I run it through a 4x12 at 1/2 volume it sounds great.

I have tried the Iconics yet, but the LBX line has gotten my attention.

I'm strictly a bedroom player. Looking for a new amp. I'm primarily after EVH 90's tones, with 80's rock being secondary. Already have all the various effects.

Which EVH amp would be a good recommendation? Primarily looking at the 3 LBX heads, the 50w 6L6 2x12 combo, and the 60w 2x12 Iconic combo.

Would be interested to get some opinions from the forum. Doesn't have to be an EVH amp if there are other amps that would be better suited.

    Thank you!

I own the 5150III LBXII (Green and Blue channels). It is loud enough to gig with, and can get pretty quiet with the power scaling switch. At bedroom levels though, it's not going to sound it's best. I've owned the 50W combo, and it's sort of the same deal, you can power scale it back, but it just doesn't sound the same until you turn it up, then it gets really loud. I haven't owned an Iconic, so I can't speak to that option.

I prefer the LBXII, because you can get the power tube saturation at gig volumes without making your ears bleed, and it has what I consider to be the best combination of channels between the Green and Blue. Everyone's ear is different, but just my opinion.

I tried a LBXIII a couple weeks back at the local guitar center. I tried and tried to like it but couldn’t get, what felt like, compression out of the tone. I may have not just cranked it loud enough. Next time I come across one that may be what I do.

If you're looking for 90s tones, the 5150 Iconics are pretty good for that. When I've tried them in stores, they're surprisingly versatile, with the overdrive/burn/boost switches. If you want to strictly stick with bedroom playing, maybe you could go with the 40W 1x12 combo or even the 15w 1x10?

That said, I own a 5150III 6L6 2x12 Combo and it's my favorite amp by a lot. Really versatile, plus the attenuator lets you go down to just 1 watt for bedroom volume. Plus if you ever start playing out live, it's more than enough amp to get you through a gig.

Thanks! Does the 6L6 sound good to you at bedroom volumes/attuned down? Some (like nobozos above) say it doesn't sound good/the same at lower volumes. That worries me.

I've also read that the Iconics are basically the 5150 overdrive pedal "in a box", which doesn't sound great to me either when looking for a nice (and expensive) amp. I already have a 5150 overdrive and an old amp, which is fine, but not looking to buy basically that pedal in an amp form if that's truly the case.

Some of the best tones on that amp is the green channel with the gain set at about 4 o'clock. I usually have my Blue channel gain at about 10:30. If you hit the front of the amp with a Blues Driver or Tube Screamer on the Green Channel, it's glorious.

I don't treat it like a two channel amp, but rather two, single channel amps. I do a lot on the green channel, using my volume or a boost pedal in front. For certain songs, I'll switch to the Blue Channel if the song calls for it, but I never switch channels in a song.

In my opinion, the 6L6 still sounds just as good in the 1W setting as any other. I mainly keep it at that setting actually.

As for the Iconic series, I've never heard that comparison before. The few times I've played them I've really liked the sound. Although I have never tried a 5150 Overdrive pedal, so I can't compare them.

If you get a chance, try out the amps in store. That may help you decide. Besides, it's up to what your ears like most anyway.

    Hope this helps

Second. I've had the 10X which is the green version for years. Sits on my desk ready to plug and play. LOVE the EVH tones. Perfect for home playing and practice at lower volumes.
