I don't claim to be the coolest kid that ever lived, but I can tell you in the 80's where I grew up - NOBODY I knew was saying "Hey dude check out the new Zappa album!"

Zappa was a reference down here - he was huge in Brazil and South America.

We used to read all about good music in the early 1980s and we heard about Yngwie leaving and Steve joining Alcatrazz. His first solo album (Flex-Able) sold well in markets like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro cities. I bought that vinyl and I remember we circulated it all over my hometown. Everyone who knew a bit about Zappa knew who Steve Vai was and we listened to these guys all the time.

Yeah...but, who cares what "cool kids" were necessarily listening to in school then? Lots of great music is far better remembered and lives on than some of the real crap that was being listened to by young people in, let's say, the 80s.

I hear you, and at the time I was taking classical piano lessons... My point was, when Im 10 or 11, there was def no Zappa on MTV or the local radio. Nor was there an internet or magazines with Frank on the cover. So I really had no way of knowing his music except for the cassettes my brother had. And I just didn't really like them. I thought they were stupid. I did def like Moon on Valley Girl though...
