From what AVH was saying, in their eyes, when they ran into Sam as a solo act at festival, he was still "that guy from Montrose." Coz they dug the Montrose debut.
I'm a fan of 3 Lock Box and VOA. But, objectively, when you hear them, it doesn't feel like the singer is just about to become VH's new frontman. The writing is too different, coz Sam's also writing the music. When listening to HSAS, it's different, because Sam's singing on top of Neal's riff, he's writing melodies to music created by a guitar hero. Just like he would a year later in VH.

Sammy has much better chemistry with Eddie Van Halen than Neal Schon. I do love the HSAS song Missing You though. If Neal playing HSAS to Ed helped get Sammy in VH, I am thankful for it. I still believe Ed being a fan of the first Montrose album is more important. Ed did not listen to much music in the 80's from everything I have read. Ed mainly talked about loving the album So by Peter Gabriel.

But...HSAS kicking Ed into getting Sammy into Van Halen???

Have you ever listened to HSAS?

Edward was drunk through most of his interviews until sometime in the 90s and then even worse until the reunion (with relapses after that)... Edward didn't put a lot of time into what he said in a lot of his interviews. If the unholy alliance between V.O.A. and Journey is what convinced Ed to get Sammy into the band, he would have said so at some point.

I believe Edward's original story: the Lambourghini dealer did it.

Edward has been very honest about the fact that he did not listen to much music. One of the only albums from the 1980s that he was very open about listening to (and, hey, it is a great album, though not as strong as some of the earlier albums) is Peter Gabriel's SO.

Fast-forward 10-11 years...Edward invited Gary Cherone to join Van Halen after Ray Danniels suggested him. I doubt very much that before this occurred, Edward was spinning the "classic" EXTREME IV around the studio...

When Edward liked a song, he would namecheck it during interviews. The only Sammy songs I remember hearing him (or Alex) namecheck during interviews were Montrose tracks like ROCK CANDY or MAKE IT LAST (admittedly great songs)...
He didnít listen to much music but he listened to enough of Samís that he told him his solo stuff sucked.

    Sweet and humble Ed.

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

    Brother Rikk.

I consider the HSAS record one of the forgotten gems of the 80s. It's a fantastic album, with some terrific Neal Schon solos. It has Sammy's only true progressive rock song.

And don't start a "but Ed was better than Neal Schon, waaaah" thing. Just be glad there's one more great rock record to listen to.

So didn't come out until May of '86, so not sure what Edward was digging before then.
