I can't think of another celebrity owned spirit company before Cabo.

Ed and Al probably were being told that it was a risky business venture and that the upfront costs for the tequila brand and the club were going to be substantial - so they bailed. I believe the Cabo Wabo was losing money for a while before it became profitable, as well.

But Sammy, like anybody who loves and is passionate about something in addition to being shrewd business-wise, was willing to sink money into it until it became a success. He believed in it. They didn't.

In hindsight, the Bros made a terrible call but at the time I'm sure they thought it was a good business decision to pull out.

And the result, yet again for the Bros, was bitterness.
It was again an ego thing, in the end. Because they didn't need the money. Both Ed & Al never had a very expensive lifestyle, relatively speaking. They made ample money compared to the amount going out. But after Sam sold Cabo Wabo, he had more money than they did, and ego wise, I'm sure they were upset.

Quite frankly, whether you love or hate Sam, he was way too important to the bands history and legacy to exclude and do a proper tribute to Ed and his otherworldly musicianship. You may hate the Hagar era, but who wrote that music? Not to mention every album went number one. I prefer the Dave era but itís intellectually dishonest in my opinion to claim VH was only relevant for the first 6 albums.

Breaks my heart the dysfunction of certain people deprived us of a proper tribute to the GOAT. Eddie deserved better than certain egos allowed.

That's why the investment is so much more than start-up money for the first few months. If you don't have the capital to handle at least two years or more, don't get involved.

In their favor, there was no way anyone could really have known how big this (Cabo Wabo) would eventually become. But it's possible the Cantina itself would never have become nearly as big as it did if it weren't for the world-popular tequila (no, I'm not being sarcastic...Cabo Wabo the tequila became popular world-wide).

It's apparently soon after the OU812 tour that Alex & Eddie were already wanting to kick Sammy out and get Dave back. Obviously they had a change of heart...the Cabo Wabo thing happened soon after that.

Then, after they pulled out of the Cantina and then it took off, it was really only a matter of time by that point. The whole "he wouldn't show up to finish BETWEEN US TWO" shit was just an excuse.

I remember during my peak years of being a Dave die-hard, I still was honest with anyone who would listen about just how good the tequila is.

My first-cousin happens to be one of my best friends. He & I are both die-hard Dave-ers. And one night, I was visiting him and he bought a bottle of Cabo Wabo just based on word of mouth (this was decades ago). I arrive, he pours two servings of it, has lime & salt ready...and as a joke, we both did a "cheers" to Sam and then...drank the tequila.

Slowly, we were both laughing our asses off...and it took us both a minute to admit to each other: "Jesus Christ...this is really fucking good tequila. Like...seriously good tequila!! DAMN! GOOD TEQUILA, SAMMY!!"

I could always tell back then just how biased a Dave fan was by asking them about the tequila. If they said to me: "And his tequila is really awful," I knew they were full of shit...hating anything just because Sammy's name was associated with it.

It's the Tequila brand that made Sammy the real money - $91 million to be exact. The Cantina (now Cantinas with Vegas) don't move the needle. Even if they are wildly profitable by the standards of the bar/restaurant business, it's chump change. I wouldn't be surprised if Sammy makes zero dollars from the Cantinas. It's a marketing expense to promote all things Sammy Hagar.

Had the bros remained owners of Cabo Wabo, it's unclear if they would have had a piece of the Tequila brand. I kind of doubt it. That was Sammy's passion and to your point, if the bros couldn't handle coughing up a few hundred grand to prop up the bar, there was zero chance they'd reach into their wallets to launch a craft Tequila. As much as the money involved, Cabo Wabo drew a line in the sand. Brand Van Halen vs. Cabo Wabo/brand Sammy.

And as we all know, you are either all-in with VH or you are out. That's how the band became three-quarters Van Halens at the end. Michael Anthony chose brand Sammy.

I don’t think “chose” is the right word. What was Mike supposed to do? You can say he knew what would happen, but why should he have waited all those years to do something? Where Mike should have told Ed to fuck off was during the negotiations for the 2004 disaster. He straight up should have told Ed to go fuck himself at that point.

Then I would have made comments like “Yeah, they’re on tour playing my bass lines”.

I agree. I'm speaking to how the VH bros viewed it. To them, MA chose sides. It's bullshit of course. MA just wants to do what brings him (and the fans) joy - playing music. I at least hope MA held out for a VERY big number to sell his rights. Those bass lines don't come cheap.

Sometimes people blame others for stuff they are also mad at themselves for so they aim their anger at themselves and whoever is perceived criminal all externally. I think Al's anger w Sam falls partly under that and likely disproportional towards Sam.

He did. Had he chose to remain loyal to the VH bros, he would have wasted the better part of two decades doing nothing and still would have been kicked out of the band to make room for Wolf. Dude just always seems like he's living his best life. He's carved out a perfect career - gets to make a living doing something he loves with very little stress or pressure and none of the trappings of extreme fame or wealth.

    Very good question, hombre.

The funny thing is...as Van Hagar albums go, I like OU812 (relatively-speaking). F.U.C.K. is the one I especially don't like...so I almost imagine Dave re-joining in 1990 or whatever and then walking into the F.U.C.K. situation and...that is especially the album I have a hard time imagining what Dave would sing on those songs.

    But it's an interesting question...

If Dave had re-joined in 1990, it could have worked and lasted. Ed's ego was NOT as out-of-control. (Of course, Ed's drinking was really bad...and it's become obvious over the years that Dave had a huge problem with Ed's alcoholism...not that Sam loved it either.)
