And Joe doing this homage will be the last testament to Ed performed live.

Well... last testament who knows. It ain't over till it's over. Maybe Alex will put something together to promote his book.

The thing is, did you know Ed the man? I didn't. Met the guy once for 10mn. But I didn't know Ed-the-man. George Lopez who played golf with him, lukather, they knew the guy. I didn't. I really only knew Ed the musician. And I'm ok with that. I might not have liked Ed-the-man. I loved Ed the musician.
So this documentary about Ed-the-man - I didn't feel a connection to that. I'm not that interested in Ed's marriage to Val. I got enough with worrying about my own marriage. Ed loved his son? I love my sons just as much.
So this BTM left me pretty cold. That's not the Ed I'm a fan of.

I can't complain about meeting Ed, he was nice, we talked for a few minutes, just me and him. I was star-struck like crazy, so it wasn't easy. But I can't pretend I knew him from those 10mn.

LOL, you're always wearing the rose-colored lenses when it comes to future VH. I love ya for that, I do.

I'm okay with knowing both Ed the man and Ed the musician. I like knowing what kind of human lays beyond the music I dig. It makes the live music experience that much more visceral. I never met him, much to my great regret. I would've enjoyed that, however brief.

Alex will definitely not be playing with anyone to promote his book. I think our best chance of ever seeing Alex play drums onstage again lays at the Forum on August 19th. But I doubt he'll ever play live again. Happy to stand corrected. I'd be shocked and thrilled if he decides to do some in-store book appearances in the fall.

Unless Dave goes out with a troop...or if WVH starts playing VH with Mammoth...this outing with Joe will be the last proper VH played live ever. Sure, Sam and Mike might always play some VH 2.0 in their sets after this year and they head out again as the Circle. But with a gunslinger of Joe's caliber...this'll be it.

Everybody talks a lot of shit about tracks, but truth is basically everybody has had some accompaniment on tracks for the last 20-30 years. There's just a big difference between layering some extra keyboards or a harmony down and using tracks to cover inadequate playing.

FWIW, I don't think I've done a gig since 2020 that hasn't had some element of tracking to it, typically just extra keyboard parts or specific samples/fx with the occasional BGVs.
Pretty sure they had singers back stage - not a track, but actual singers.

    This.

If you are going to a show, there is a more likely than not chance that at least something you are hearing is not coming from the people on stage. It is what it is.

To me, there is a difference between something that improves the show, vs something that replaces the show. If it is the former, I could not care less.

In my humble opinion, there is a reason why Van Halen Mach IV sounded better on the 07/08 tour than they did on other tours, and it wasn't just that DLR's voice was in good shape for that tour.

Let's use Def Leppard as an example, I can remember reading once that a song from Hysteria (can't remember which one) had 30+ vocal tracks. If the go out and play that song note for note perfect without a backing track, people are thinking to themselves "this band sucks live". If you are going to have 200 tracks on a song become commonplace, you can't then go out on tour without backing tracks.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Well Dave did in the very beginning of 2020 when he was out with KISS. He lifted Mike's voice straight from the albums as well as use his own to help himself during songs like Panama. It's painfully obvious when one section sounds like 1984 Dave and the other is 2020 Dave. Big difference!

    Mike didn't know about it.

An interviewer pointed it out to him. He said oh really? Mike said in a joking voice I should be getting some $$$ coming in then!

Dave said that, but it isn't Mike, at least it wasn't on the 2007/08 tour. Maybe he just lifted Mike's vocals off for recent stuff, I have no idea about that.
