I saw Skid Row open for Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, and Van Halen. I saw their headlining tour with Pantera in support. They kicked ass live. I met them all except Snake and Rob. Snake did give me a wave at the Van Halen concert when I saw him from the side of the stage standing behind the speaker cabinets.

Like I said when I saw Skid Row in 91 open for GNR they absolutely destroyed them.

And Slave To The Grind is a better album than either of the Illusion records.

Those albums were so disappointing to me. I stood online at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard with a million other fucking idiots waiting for those albums til midnight, with stupid MTV cameras and everything.

I was just disappointed, almost from the first listen. So much self-indulgent bullshit on those albums. If they just made one album out of it, it would’ve been a lot better. Yeah there are moments of good songs, but there are so many fucking skips and filler bullshit on those records it’s ridiculous. Everything cool about Appetite is almost non-existent on those records. And I can’t stand Matt Sorum’s formulaic drumming. Izzy’s guitar is also barely audible in the left speaker. It’s just really strange mix throughout too.

Makes sense that the tour they did that I went to three times was also a bloated fucking mess of shit.

There aren’t better ways to open an album than what Skid Row did with Monkey Business, Slave to the Grind, and The Threat.

Totally different for me. I worked at a chain music store in Manhattan right by the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway. The promotion for that album was out of this world. The ONLY thing anybody would come in and ask for all day every day was the new Guns album and it wasn’t even out yet.

The operation for that was something else too. Every week we’d have the music police and record company people coming in and talking to my bosses. At one point rumors spread that there was no album, that Izzy quit , that Axl was dying, you name it. Looking back I think maybe the record company planted those . Then they would tease us and drop off promo stuff to hang and tell us “be ready”. Then nothing would happen.

When we got 100% confirmation that the album was going to be delivered Monday we didn’t believe it. My boss told everyone to expect to work late Monday night since the album couldn’t be sold until Tuesday. That meant we were staying open past midnight. The album arrived that afternoon and it was on. We were allowed to open a box and start playing it. We loved it from “Right Next Door To Hell” on. We had a speaker outside the store and everyone on Broadway could hear it. People starting coming as soon as they recognized it wanting to buy it. We had to tell them to come back at midnight.

We even had to start a line for people waiting for the new Guns album. Shit was wild. The phones were ringing non stop for that thing too. People yelling “Guns ‘n’ Fuckin’ Roses muthafucka” from outside. The Ritz was right around the corner too so we had those guys coming in for the hookup. You’d think they were playing right on Broadway that might. Come to think of it they should have. Like The Stones did in’75 when they drove around Manhattan on a flatbed playing live.

So yeah, totally different experience for me and I loved it.

And then after all that died down and it was just about the music and you really listened to it, you realized it wasn’t all that fucking great.

I didn’t mind standing in the line. I was a huge fan so I looked forward to getting the albums at midnight. And it was cool that MTV was there there and interviewing people and they asked to interview me and I just said no because I’m not that kind of a person. So yeah, it was cool and of course, many of us really didn’t really believe there was going to be an album coming out that night, but we were standing there anyway.

But eventually, it just came to be about the albums, and I didn’t really think they were that great.

IMO, the best song on either of the UYI albums ...

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

I don’t like long epic songs like that. That thing just bores the shit out of me. And it’s repetitive. It is more enjoyable to listen to than November Rain, however. But both of those songs of those songs are just too self/indulgent for me.

It’s probably why I like Van Halen so much. The songs are usually shorter and to the point. You rarely hear Ed do some big long-winded solo that’s unnecessary. There’s a lot of that in GNR.

Ed turned into that on Van Halen III and of course we know how shitty that thing is.

I think this run of songs on UYII is pretty damn good:

    Breakdwon
    Pretty Tied Up
    Locomotive
    So Fine
    Estranged
    You Could Be Mine
    Don't Cry

Yeah, the first one has the better stuff I think. I do like Locomotive on the second album. And Civil War and You Could Be Mine are good. But the rest. Yeah….uh.

Don’t Cry is the same song with just different lyrics than UY 1, and the lyrics are not nearly as good.

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner
