I actually really, really prefer USE YOUR ILLUSION II. I like almost every song on it.

I really enjoyed those two albums back in '92 (I didn't get them until '92 because I got sick of them around '89-'90 and it took a couple of years for me to go back to liking them again).

I know a lot of people bitch about the USE YOUR ILLUSION albums...but there's a lot of cool stuff in there, if one is willing to put some effort into digesting all that material.

There aren't too many things I completely dislike on those two CDs.

BUT...I do FUCKING HATE their cover of KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR...it totally misses the melancholy vibe of the original.

There are some songs I think are pretty blah, like PERFECT CRIME, RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO HELL, BACK OFF BITCH, DON'T DAMN ME, GET IN THE RING & MY WORLD.

I also think McCartney/Wings' version of LIVE AND LET DIE is a hundred times better than Guns' version.

Songs I ESPECIALLY LIKE on the USE YOUR ILLUSION albums:

USE YOUR ILLUSION I
Don't Cry (not my favorite, but it's a good song...both versions are fine, though the USE YOUR ILLUSION I version is possibly better)
Bad Obsession
Double Talkin' Jive
(this is just a killer song, especially live)
November Rain (totally overplayed, but it is a good piece of work)
The Garden (I love this song)
Dead Horse
Coma
(such an awesome, epic song)

USE YOUR ILLUSION II
Civil War (contender for the best G N' R song ever, in my opinion)
14 Years (for some reason, maybe because I really like Izzy, this might be my favorite song in the whole USE YOUR ILLUSION package)
Yesterdays (this song takes me back to high school...makes me nostalgic)
Breakdown
Pretty Tied Up
(another great Izzy song)
Locomotive (really cool song...sounds a lot like something from APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION)
So Fine (great tribute to the late Johnny Thunders)
Estranged (I think this is a classic, epic song)

Yeah, I like the whole USE YOUR ILLUSION period. The band was a mess. But I love just the absolute ton of material from both albums.

For me, Guns N' Roses is one of those bands where I listen to the singles on the radio, and think they're pretty good. Then I listen to the other songs on the album, and I go, "Um, what am I listening to? Is this even the same band?" Their first album is strong, but the rest of their discography is hit and miss at best. Just my opinion.

Thumbs up

I love

November Rain

You Could Be Mine

Estranged

Don't Cry

They also have decent covers of Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Live & Let Die. But I don't go wild over cover songs usually.

Appetite is a great album. Everything after that is completely hit or miss, I agree.

The lyrics for Appetite made sense - these guys had moved to LA (well except Slash), didn't have money, and were trying to make it. They were cool.

But if you look at Use Your illusion, it's a totally different vibe. They have money, but are still bitching like a bunch of angry teens. "Double Talkin Jive." "Get In The Ring" - it's super immature stuff. That was already my opinion back then. Just very uncool stuff, except for You Could Be Mine. Badmotorfinger and Dirt wiped the floor with that nonsense.

Default WVH "Behind the Music?!?!:

Here are like the 13 songs that I think wouldíve made a good one UYI album. These are not in any order.

1. Civil War
2. You Could Be Mine
3. Locomotive
4. Right Next Door To Hell
5. November Rain (hate this song, but I realize its importance in their history.)
6. Dust Ní Bones
7. Donít Cry
8. Pretty Tied Up
9. Bad Obsession
10. 14 Years
11. Estranged
12. Breakdown
13. Donít Damn Me

But again, I just donít think any of these songs contain the fire and grit that AFD had. There are some good songs here, but itís just a big fall off imo.

I just started listening to Skid Row's debut, there are a lot of GREAT hard rock songs on that record. Here I am is my current fav but the whole record is good. I loved Warrant back in the day I think Janie Lane was very, very talented. they had some great songs on their first few records. I've had the 2 UYI records on my list of "records I should listen to" since I just never sat down and really listened to them. I do love the Slash's Snakepit record. the song doin Fine is an awesome song, very fun stuff on that whole record.

I don't know why...but it makes me happy seeing other people acknowledging tracks like BREAKDOWN, LOCOMOTIVE, PRETTY TIED UP and 14 YEARS. Whatever one thinks of the USE YOUR ILLUSION project, those are really strong songs.

Also, I will agree that...there is nothing on either USE YOUR ILLUSION album that has the "raw power" that IT'S SO EASY, ROCKET QUEEN or MR. BROWNSTONE have.

Most of UYI 1 is fine. It's UYI 2 where we find more bad tunes.

I like most of the songs between both albums. But at the end of the day, it was missing that rawness and swagger of Appetite.
