Talking Support Act that blew you away . . .

As a favor to a longtime friend, in 1978, I went to see Kansas with him. I had no interest in Kansas personally, but he didn't want to go the concert alone.

We were both blown away by the warm up act: It was Cheap Trick.
The guitarist was goofing around, and, at the same time, playing hard rock very well.

The very next day, I bought their debut LP and my friend bought In Color.

John Mellencamp opening for an alt pop band from Chicago Material Issue in about 92. I was stationed in Chicago, Material Issue was this Chicago band which had an album. John was in town doing an interview and I guess asked the DJ he wanted to play somewhere. They told them about the show and he opened with a 4 piece stripped down band. Was great

A couple for now off the top of my head, but I know there are plenty more.

Halestorm opening for Shinedown at the Boston House of Blues 2009, about 6 months before their debut album came out. Lzzy Hale is the greatest pure rock vocalist of her generation.

The last incarnation of Thin Lizzy opening for Judas Priest at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, MA in 2011. They played Roisin Dubh: Black Rose & I damn near cried during the guitar solo.

I saw some band called Guns 'N Roses open for Cheap Trick at Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach, CA in December 1986.

About 6 months earlier, I saw some guitar player named Stevie Ray Vaughan open for Bonnie Raitt at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

Would've loved to have seen VH back in the day stealing the thunder from Sabbath.

I'm not sure I've seen an opening act "blow me away" but I agree with Raldo about Kenny Wayne Shephard. That was the first thought that came to my head.

Saw Korn open for Ozzy before they were popular. They were...interesting.

Anyone remember seeing Alice in Chains open for VH in '91? I'm sure they were fine, but I don't recall anything about their performance.

Not sure it counts but I remember seeing Extreme open for Bon Jovi. But I was already a fan of Extreme and so I knew what to expect.

    No.

I won the MTB Tenth 1980 album and tickets to the show on WMMS and the tour was to support that album. Show was 6/17/80 and Tommy died in April, 1980

Of course I knew nothing about the band back then except for Can't You See, Heard It In A Love Song & It Takes Time. Still can't believe WMMS ever played those songs at one time.

Rollins Band opening for Janes Addiction at The Jar in '91. Rollins was insane live in only his little black shorts.

Danzig opening for Black Sabbath at Nautica Stage in '92. Never before had I seen such a tiny man with such a ridiculously large belt buckle. We kept laughing and saying it must be poking his abs. Ha ha! Still... it was a pretty intense pairing of hard rock bands on a perfect summer evening on the river.
