David Coverdale Talks About Jimmy Page, His New Haircut & New Whitesnake Music.

It's pretty cool Reb Beach has been the longest Whitesnake member, going on 20 years now. Tommy Aldridge has been with Whitesnake a long time too. He quit and came back twice though. David wants Whitesnake back on the road, but limited touring, he says it's tougher to tour in your 70's. He's getting together with the band soon, it sounds like a new album is in the works. He actually had a hairdresser fly in from LA to cut his hair. LOL! I guess that's a perk of being a rich rockstar.

    Unhappy

Bernie Marsden, the original guitarist for monumentally popular 1980s metal band Whitesnake, died Thursday night at age 72. The news was first announced by former bandmate and Whitesnake lead singer David Coverdale, and was confirmed by a statement from his family. He was 72.

Marsden was born in 1951 in Buckingham, England, and by his mid-20s he'd been the member of numerous notable bands, including UFO and Paice Ashton Lord. According to a 2020 interview with Louder, it wasn't until 1978 that he found international fame, founding Whitesnake (initially called “David Coverdale’s Whitesnake”) with guitarist Micky Moody and Coverdale, who had recently left the band Deep Purple.

“There are certain moments in your career that feel like turning points,” Marsden said of playing live with Whitesnake. “I was watching everything going on as I was playing, thinking to myself: ‘This is the band that you always dreamed you would be in.’”

Marsden remained a member of Whitesnake until 1982, co-writing some of the band's best-known hits. such as “Fool for You Loving" and “Here I Go Again." The latter song, arguably Whitesnake's most recognizable hit, was recut for the band's 1987 album Whitesnake, released after Marsden had left the band.

Speaking with Louder, Marsden said that it took less than a day to write the song, which hit #1 on the singles chart in the U.S. and remained in the top 10 for weeks. “It took maybe two hours,” Marsden said. “It all came together pretty quickly. And when I played it to David he got really excited. He went to his room and rewrote and rearranged the lyrics. I had no problem with that at all, because that’s how we were writing in those days, fifty-fifty.”

After his time with Whitesnake, Marsden launched a number of solo projects and collaborated with luminaries including, as noted by Guitar World, “Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Jon Lord, Ringo Starr, Rory Gallagher, Jack Bruce and Warren Haynes.” He also wrote an autobiography, entitled Where’s My Guitar: An Inside Story of British Rock and Roll, that was published in 2017.

His most recent album, Trios, was released in August 2022, Billboard notes. That same year, Marsden underwent surgery, and experienced some health setbacks including “acute dehydration,” he said in a statement posted to social media last August. The challenges prompted him to cancel a tour planned for late 2022, and it appears he did not return to the road.

I like Whitesnake but David Coverdale will always be a cunt for what he did to John and the others. It always pisses me off seeing those fake vids with the scabs he hired instead of the musicians that actually played on the 1987 album. Fuck you, Coverdale!

I have read that Coverdale was having a lot of problems with his voice at that time. John Sykes and the rest of the Whitesnake members talked about replacing Coverdale behind his back, and planned on having a Whitesnake without Coverdale. David Coverdale found out and said you can't fire me, Whitesnake is my band. Then he fired them instead.

I am not 100 percent that is true though, I wasn't there.

After all the drama and musical chairs that happened with Deep Purple, I kinda don't blame Coverdale for wanting to create a musical outfit that was...his.

I don't like how he handled the business of hiring/firing members. He certainly upset people a lot...I think he even fired Ian Paice at one point...and Jon Lord, who was in Whitesnake for years, said that the band became pretty tough with all the drama near the end of his tenure.

Steve Vai goes out of his way to say great things about Dave all the time. Steve really likes Dave and looks back on those years with nothing but fondness.

And Vai also has a similar attitude concerning Frank Zappa. He's very grateful for all the musical & business experience he got playing with Zappa.

BUT (from what I understand), Vai does not have much nice to say about his reasonably short time in Whitesnake.

YR, I've read that Coverdale took LSD (Lead Singer Disease) to a whole new level and no one could stop him since he controlled the band. Hence, why we got Tawny Kitaen. Imagine if DLR tried doing the same with VH?!

I have seen many Vai interviews when he praised Coverdale and his time with Whitesnake. He thinks Coverdale is a phenomenal singer. He is still friends with Coverdale to this day. He even got on stage again with Whitesnake in 2022 to play Still Of The Night live.

Rikk, I don't blame Vai for ignoring his time with Whitesnake. Like Adrian Vandenberg, he was phenomenal but completely wasted and over-qualified for the job and they all knew it. Luckily they saw the writing on the wall and soon parted ways. I'm sure they all got a good laugh about it later.
