NFL off season thread

Watching the HOF speeches especially Randy Gradishar I have to wonder why Mike "Mad Dog" Curtis is still left out. He was just as good as Randy who also was way overdue imo. Mad Dog is dead now a few years or more but lives as my avatar here since I figured out how to do that thing long ago. The dude went after Unitas in training camp his first season when he was a full back. Don't forget Shula moved him to linebacker after seeing a season of him destroying guys on special teams and in practice. He never played his rookie year.

He was both an all pro at outside and inside LB.No one else in the 124 year history of the NFL has ever done that! He lost a step his last years in the league and got traded to garbage teams like Seattle as an expansion team so not as many all pros as some other HOFers. Bill Bergey said on the radio in my car that it's a travesty he's not in and Mike Singletary on video has compared him to Lanier,Nitschke, and even Butkus.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey Has Calf Injury, Likely Out for 2024 NFL Preseason

So much for all these non contact no tackle drills practices. Tons of soft tissue injuries. Look around the league. Its an epidemic. IMO these guys workout and practice all year round and it's too much for the human body to handle. It was better off back in the day when they did mostly nothing from January- July and used 4-5 exhibition games and longer training camps to get into shape. In a micro way they never heal from the previous season. And they do this now from high school to pro.

Bill Curry who's still alive and won Super Bowl's with Green Bay and Baltimore once said I had to line up against Mike four days a week in practice so game day was always my easiest day of the week. I would have liked to ask Walt Garrison what he thought about playing against Mad Dog?

He wasn't really going to play much in preseason anyway, if at all.

But I agree with you about the epidemic of injuries now. Pretty much in all sports. They're all year-round now.

With the explosion of online media and sports betting, I think part of it is simply that it is more readily available information now.

If Earl Campbell had a calf injury and was going to miss the pre-season, no one outside of Houston would even known about it.

When I was a kid during the off-season NFL all the out of the Baltimore area NFL news that there was came from magazines or local TV sport reports. The local paper would not always print stories on guys in Chicago ASAP maybe 1-2 days later This was pre ESPN. Hell most never knew who the Baltimore Colts drafted until the next days edition of the Baltimore Sun . They had 15 rounds back then and the lower picks could take 3 days to learn.

Duane Thomas died a few days ago. One of the NFLs original diva head cases. He had great ability but never lived up to it. Couple that with the no bs coaching style of Tom Landry and it was a perfect non fit in Dallas. RIP

Is the much anticipated Eagles vs. Ravens game still on for today?

I read that Lamar just joined the team this week after a sickness. I guess he’ll be opting out of the preseason schedule as much as possible. Also, see that Pickett doesn’t have the Eagles backup position locked down. In fact him being cut is making a few headlines as well. Jeez…all he had to do was let Wilson implode in Pittsburgh.

As far as I know Ravens exhibition with Philly is a go. Rain has moved out here. Of course no Lamar. His mystery illness seems to have subsided since he missed a week of whatever training camp is nowadays . I'll watch the rookies and UDFAs. I have a good eye for football talent. I should have been a scout.

How about just don't buy Sunday Ticket. It would be cheaper to go to a sports bar and buy a burger and a coke every Sunday. Since the NFL won the court case on this the brakes have come off.

Hey Edwardv, Trace McSorley is on another team (the Commanders), I guess he is hoping to make another practice squad and then somewhere along the year cash another game check due to injuries and get another year on his pension benefits.

Not a bad gig if you can get it.

It's not bad money to be on an NFL practice squad, and you can get game checks if someone pulls you onto their active rosters.

There are worse ways to make a living.
