Of course Hagar was or is going to say he wanted to be as big as whoever the biggest rock band was at the time... which was Van Halen. What was he going to say in 1982-'84... "I want to be as big as Krokus?"

A Flock of Seagulls was big in 1982.

You're missing the point. Wanting to compete, rival, challenge is not the same as actually doing it and for the record, he is saying he felt he was just as big. That's literally what his comment meant. He's not deftly playing with semantics.

Yes, he was never as big as VH. But I think it's cool that he wanted to compete with VH. He wanted to get bigger and get stuff done, and that "can do" spirit benefitted VH once he joined the band.
I feel like your getting ready to throw Sam under the bus somehow.

Opening for one of, if not the only, radio-friendly rock bands to grow exponentially in the 90s, unfazed by the tumbleweeds surrounding AOR, rock, metal and the euphoria around grunge, alternative/Nu metal and britpop, headlining football stadiums worldwide as opposed to just North America, and exposing your music to a new demographic - particularly in Europe - that's well-placed to like and buy your music is not a downgrade nor a misstep. And if you're drawing partisan party lines or on some notion of 'cool vs lame', as I think you are, then you're looking at the music biz completely wrong.

I'm going to level with you, his new level was a level that was several levels below the level of Van Halen.

Solo Sammy was great! But it was just rock n roll music. Van Halen, at that time, was great rock music with swagger, attitude, humor, personality and power. How could he not be a fan of 1984?!

As much as I love VH I'd rather munch to Mars than wash Wolfgang's dirty water dog.

Sammy Hagar was on the same level as Van Halen like Sean Cassidy was on the same level as Led Zeppelin.
