So that’s my answer to the question.

As someone who has an original Peavey 5150, and a Marshall cab, there is no way to get a classic Marshall sound out of that amp. It’s not a Marshall and it doesn’t sound like it. For me the sound is fine, but it is not brown like a Marshall.
It’s the tubes. I run vintage Sylvania 6L6’s in my 5150II and you can get a vintage sound. But you have to turn the gain down.

The new EVH amps? No way in hell. You could do ok I suppose with the EL head amp but not the 6L6 heads.

The most critical difference is really each amp's approach to gain stages. The Marshalls are non-master volume amps that required the variac to bring volumes down to a semi-reasonable level because it's the power amp, what's actually creating the volume, that is providing the extra push into Ed's original high gain tone. The Peavey and EVH heads can be turned down and still sound so gainy because they're preamp gain based. The 5150iii EL34 falls into this preamp based gain trap as well. In fact those are more closely related to the Stealth and thus have even more preamp gain on tap, you're better off with the 6L6 version. And Ed wasn't even using EL34s in his Marshalls anyway, they were Sylvania 6CA7s.

This is the closest I've come. 5150iii using Greenback IRs and a bit of EQ and verb in my DAW. It's not quite there but it's close enough for me.

One of Ed's first purchases during the 1978 tour was a brand new Les Paul Custom. And he started collecting vintage Les Pauls by 1980. He was definitely a fan of them even if he wasn't using them live.

Hence the second part of my post which you didn’t quote bro lol.

Each to their own, I haven’t played a Les Paul in 15 years. Break too easily.

Going by the old bootlegs, it sometimes sounded like he was trying to get 5150 tones out of his Marshall. But then you hear the studio recordings and it's total Marshall.

I also think that Ed got tired of wrestling the guitar. As always said, "The tone is in the hands." It was HARD playing those old amps. You had to earn your notes. At some point, he found those Soldanos and all that preamp gain was just easier to play. A lot of the dynamics and percussion was lost. Ed kinda lost a big part of his playing then.

UAFX Lion 68, straight into your Effects return (bypassing your pre amp), or straight into your DAW. Done. Pete goes into EVH mode around an hour 21 minutes:

Yes! Easier to play affects how your fingers interact with the neck. That workmanship, that effort and feel from having to work harder absolutely came through in the notes. He lost the X-factor after the Marshalls and the Superstrats. It was still Eddie, but tamer version. I compare it to breaking the sound barrier. When Yeager did it, it was dramatic. The aircraft was pushed to its limits. He held on for dear life and flew it through the number. Compare it to flying an F-18 that breaks Mach 1 and you don't even feel it. It's just does it. No biggie. Ed's sound was like that. He was hanging on for dear life taming the current, and it was glorious. Later? Just not the same.

I wonder if Ed would have like the basswood in the Wolfgang. This actually makes me think about the Kramer 5150 wood discussion. We sure some of Ed's Wolfgang's aren't/weren't ash?
