Default Has Anyone Else Ever Had This Thought…

Hello everyone, has anyone else ever thought this or maybe it’s been mentioned since we all dissect and over think every VH thing, but if you could time travel to 1978-1979 and give Eddie a Wolfgang and 5150 amp, would he be like, “fuck…this is exactly what I’ve been chasing!!”….now, I’m like the majority and wish the sound never changed at Fair Warning and the older I get, I don’t like the Balance era sound forward. Is it his hearing, and maybe in like 79 he’d hear a Wolfgang and 5150 and think it sucks or would he be like, “Yes!!!!!!”.

I think he'd like the guitar, I don't think he'd like the amp.

Here's the reasoning: Ed's liked Super Distortions swapped for Alnico magnets since at least 1979, if not earlier. The Wolfgang pickups are in that same 14k resistance range with either Alnico 5 (Peavey) or Alnico 2 (EVH) magnets in the bridge. In 1979 he probably wouldn't care much about the neck pickup. We know he liked Les Pauls in that era, and the binding/arched top approach of the Wolfgang feels LP-ish. And in terms of neck specs while the EBMM, Peavey and EVH necks were all different there weren't drastic differences. They are all in the same ballpark as the 5150, which we know he liked around 1983. So yeah, high likelihood he'd love the guitar. So in terms of tactile feel I think 1979 Ed's preferences could've been in line with what a Wolfgang offers and in terms of tone it's not far off from what he was already experimenting with.

Now the amp...that's a different story. I think there's much more of a journey on Ed's amps than guitars. Sure he used Marshalls for the first 10 years of album recording. But it started in mono with a little harmonizer on overdubs. Then the harmonizer got more prevalent. Then it went to a stereo rig. Then the harmonizer took over the sound. Then he started looking for more preamp gain based tones like the Soldano or CAE preamps. All of that led to what the 5150 series became. I think 1979 Ed would've been amazed at the amount of gain you could get at such a low volume, but would've missed some of the feel/sag of his Marshall rig.

In summary, his ears changed more than his hands did along the evolution of his gear and playing.

I agree he'd probably like the guitar. The amp? I doubt it. Ed's hearing changed (was damaged) substantially by the time of the later Peavey and EVH periods, and you heard it in his tone, especially live. Those amps just sound weird to me, and way too gainy. Compared to his classic tones, there is an overt lack of warmth. The sound became very nasally. That chest-pounding warmth, and the yowling highs were lost. Everything lost the edge, became too polished, clean, and less exciting. I don't think 1979 Ed with the ear he had would care for it when as I fan I, and many others don't. However, I would LOVE to hear a signature amp from 1978 thru 1984 Ed. Man, to dream.

My initial thought was "would love the guitar, hate the amp", but I wanted to wait for Jedi to say it so I could know I was right.

What really confuzzles me about the amps and his later sound is - YOU CAN GET THE OG SOUNDS WITH THEM EASY! But Ed never seemed to do that for whatever his reasoning.

JoeZlo, on what Fender EVH head and what settings to find the old sound? My buddy has a stealth 50 watt head, it’s nice. I have a LBX and the thing is just HOT. Also, am I the only one that misses Reverb on EVH shit? I need to cover my mistakes every way possible for christ sake!

You don’t play roughed up superstrats for years if carved tops and binding is your bag, not when the money starts rolling in lol.

As a guitar connoisseur would he have liked them, yes. Would he have sacked his current set up off for them, no.

Ed’s best sound was a Super Strat and a Marshall. Or you can throw the Destroyer in there before he ruined it.

So that’s my answer to the question.

As someone who has an original Peavey 5150, and a Marshall cab, there is no way to get a classic Marshall sound out of that amp. It’s not a Marshall and it doesn’t sound like it. For me the sound is fine, but it is not brown like a Marshall.

I'm confused. It's the amps fault and not the "cab"? You need the Marshall amp?

I’m just telling you it doesn’t matter that I have a Marshall cab. It doesn’t sound like a Marshall with a 5150, no matter what you use.

You want a classic Marshall sound, get a Marshall, or some boutique amp like a Friedman.

Maybe some guys can get their 5150s or their EVH versions to sound like a Marshall, but I’ve never heard one that I thought sounded that close. I’d rather just have a Marshall.
