Thanks for that. I saw Portnoy live on the G3 tour and he blew me away! He is my 2nd favorite drummer after Alex. So it's a great treat for me to hear him cover Alex. I loved him playing I'm The One live the most.

Not to be a debbie downer, but totally not suited to play this kind of music. He's so heavy on the down beats, on the 2 and 4. Has none of the swing that Alex has. He comes from a different school of drumming.

LD, that's because Portnoy is a metal drummer, something AVH never was. He's just giving his interpretation of what he likes about Van Halen. As with Ray Luzier's interview, I love these kinds of tributes!

I love Portnoy and think he's an amazing drummer, but I agree his style doesn't really do it justice. I think Ray showed that he was much more influenced by Alex's playing.

Somebody get Dave Grohl for one of these interviews. He'll make you think AVH was back behind the kit!

Not saying Portnoy is a bad drummer, not at all. He just sounds stiff playing AVH stuff.

It is silly that he couldn't sit down and talk to them. He sent the set the drum set over instead. Maybe he thought they were going to interview the drum set.

I get it, he is a Prog Metal guy and it will come through. BUT, I can appreciate how much enthusiasm he has for the AVH drum parts and VH in general. He even showed a few AVH fills he pretty much copied later in DT and WD. He is a fan.

I mean how many people in the general public out there even know the songs LUTS, Sunday, One Foot?? Let alone be able to reference back that VH opened with Romeo D at the US Fest in 83.

It shows you how special AVH's drumming is. Who can play boogies at that tempo, with this much swing, in the rock world? It's pretty unique.
