Thereís no doubt that Joe is talented. Heís just not my cup of tea. Personally, I think Vai is a lot better and more well rounded. I donít really like the music he makes. But thereís no doubt that he is talented.

I bought the following CDs back in 1989 and 1990:

Joe Satriani (Flying In A Blue Dream)

    Steve Vai (Passion And Warfare)

    Eric Johnson (Ah Via Musicom)

I love all 3 of these albums. Eric Johnson has the best tone, followed by Satch and then Vai. All 3 of these guys are amazing players, and nothing anybody says will change my opinion. I've seen Eric Johnson twice, and both times he was just ridiculously good. I saw Jeff Beck a couple of months before he passed away and I liked Eric Johnson way more.

    Just my $.02.

Steve Vai talks about Joe playing Van Halen songs in a new interview, and what it was like when he played Van Halen songs with Roth.

You’re probably aware that Joe will be tackling some Van Halen licks this year on the Best of All Worlds tour. As someone who took on some of Eddie’s licks with David Lee Roth, what’s the secret to nailing it?

“Do not try to play them like Edward because you can't. I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to play those songs with Roth because they’re beautiful.

“They’re like little orchestrations on the guitar; they fall so nicely and are very well constructed. When I approached them I wanted to retain the integrity of the riffs because they're brilliant, and you need to respect them.

I wouldn’t try to sound like Edward Van Halen because I couldn’t and didn’t want to. The best thing to do was to honor the parts and play them how I felt them

“But I also knew instinctually that I wouldn’t try to sound like Edward because I couldn’t and didn’t want to. The best thing to do was to honor the parts and play them how I felt them.

“I’d play them, and it was great because they’re fantastic guitar parts, and I did my best. And after going through that, and even while it was happening, I felt relieved and comfortable with the audience – meaning the Edward fans. They weren’t expecting Edward, and they were very kind to me.
Right Now you're reading my post!

When you think about it, it's such a different situation. Vai in 86 was in Dave's band full time. No kids, no business to run. Full on 24/7 commitment. Satch in 2024 is doing a million things. It's going to be way different for him.

Always liked how Steve talked about Edward with such reverence, and even always called him Edward, not Ed or Eddie.

Steve Vai is a class act, VH could take lessons from him on how to talk about each other.

Joe will do great. I didn't think his unprepared Stern performance was that horrible considering no rehearsal and he only kinda knew segments of stuff. I expected him to woodshed and bake it all in the oven b4 the tour.

I'm surprised though to read how deep he's deep diving or caring about a specific tone to even have an amp custom made for it. I mean it's touching in a sense with the miraculous Edward's passing that such a reverence or interest is being invested by Joe but Idk seems like overkill to stress on that. Maybe it's fun or he feels it's deserving to even take on the task. Did he worry about that with Blackmore when he was in Purple for a stint? Was the dumb backlash he got from the Stern thing a catalyst to go scorched earth with his preparedness? lol

For me VH is truly the original 4 but I enjoy stuff from all eras and into anything Ed has played so I think that tour is a cool thing, excited to hear Joe play. Still I find it curious with the custom amp and intense concern. Maybe it's Joe's way of paying respect properly, perhaps? idk

    Nuno's a fucking machine.

At 25 years old he could shred with the best, heralded in the 90s as the EVH for the new generation, displayed insane technical prowess and even more insane rhythm playing and usually all in one take that others would need overdubs in order to achieve, and could play acoustic guitar, 40s-era jazz and southern blues with the expertise of a 40 year veteran.

There's a reason he was so lauded when he burst on the scene and reinvigorated rock guitar after a decade that ended in stagnation. Composition, taste, technique, a unique voice - he had it all and that's why anyone with ears knew how special he was. Re-read the articles circa 1988/89 and how legends like George Lynch, when asked about the future of the guitar, replied 'there's this kid from Boston, you haven't heard of him yet but you will, he's the future'.

Anyone who wasn't floored upon hearing just proves they lack the expertise to pass judgement. They can have their opinion but it's wrong and not as valid as anyone else's, only demonstrating that they're ignorant on topics they have no business commenting on - especially non-guitarists who arrogantly and hilariously-mistakenly feel equipped to comment. GTFO.

Nothing against Satriani at all, but I'm amazed Nuno didn't even seem to be in the mix when there was reunion talk. To me, he's obviously the most suitable guitarist to take on Ed's parts. That doesn't mean I think he's better overall or technically than others, but he is the best for that particular job.

Like I say, Satriani is amazing at what he's done, but he's said himself clearly that he never even played Van Halen much before. Nuno grew up on it and modelled his playing on it.
