Default Hall & Oates Bassist T-Bone Wolk Dies

    from billboard.com:

Tom "T-Bone" Wolk, who played bass for nearly 30 years with Daryl Hall and John Oates and also recorded with Elvis Costello and Billy Joel, died Saturday (Feb. 27) of an apparent heart attack. Wolk was to have performed with Hall and Oates today as part of the one-year anniversary show for NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon."

Wolk's age is unknown at deadline. A Yonkers, N.Y., native, the musician played bass on Kurtis Blow's early rap classic "These Are the Breaks" and between 1986 and 1992, served as the bassist for the "Saturday Night Live" house band, where he became familiar for his omnipresent black top hat. Wolk also collaborated and recorded with Carly Simon, Rosanne Cash, Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper, Jewel and Shawn Colvin throughout his career.

But he was best known for his tenure with Hall and Oates, which began with the 1981 album "Private Eyes" and continued until the present day. In addition to his bass work for the duo, Wolk also served as a co-producer on several of their projects.

Funeral details have yet to be announced.

    RIP, T-Bone.

One of the all-time greats in my book.

I grew up listening to his outstanding bass work.

    He will be missed...

Sad to hear of his passing. I was just thinking yesterday about Hall and Oates and how much fun they were back in the early 80's, when the world itself seemed much more "fun". Perhaps because of my age at the time. At any rate, they were good times, and Hall and Oates made oddly fun videos, and T-Bone was there, the dude with the funny hat, the bassist who didn't look like a rock star, yet there he was, right there on the MTV, and later, live, every Saturday night. R.I.P., Tom Wouk.

Default The Craziest Hall & Oates Video Ever

Sometimes there's a music video that changes everything -- a video that makes your bad day turn good, turns your frown upside down, and confuses the everliving hell out of you. Today, I bring you that video. In 1976 1973, Hall & Oates made a "promotional video" for their single "She's Gone." It's a spectacular testament to the power of the format: Hall and Oates slump in armchairs, scowling, lazily smoking and occasionally lip-syncing. There's so much going on here (and not going on here) that I think I'll defer to the experts, Stereogum, to explain:

Is Daryl Hall wearing high-heeled clogs and smoking a cigarette during the video? Yep. Are they literally “paying” the devil to replace the woman by throwing fake money in the air every time they sing the lyric? Of course. Is John Oates wearing a tuxedo shirt with neither arms, sides, nor back? You bet! And does the devil then help him into a tuxedo jacket, and does that tuxedo jacket have flippers, and does Oates then rip off a wicked fake solo while holding the guitar in his flipper-clad hands? Yes, yes, yes, yes!

    You're welcome.

Genius! Hall looks as if he's going for a bit of a Bowie look, too! Can't believe this one never popped up on M-tv's "Closet Classics"!

Default Daryl Hall & John Oates

Hall & Oates, one of the most successful and iconic duos in musical history, are not just on the outs ... they're in litigation.

Daryl Hall has filed a lawsuit against his former musical compadre John Oates, claiming some form of breach of contract. What's more, Hall got a restraining order against Oates this past Friday.

Damn, I read through that list of artistes that have sold their publishing rights. You hear all these stories of artists fighting so hard to gain control of their publishing, just can’t fathom a living artist turning around and selling it.
