"Nobody" was hyperbole as im prone to, but when it sounds like LWAN... get back to me.

Like the riffage just right after the tapping part intro in GGB. NOBODY does it as smooth. Before they go apeshit. Idk how to explain. I'm not a guitar player.

Ed’s playing on LWAN is perfection.

I've listened to plenty of boots from '86 where Ed is great, but nowhere near what he was doing on LWAN. They really caught lightning in a bottle on that night, especially during his solo spot.

And he was buzzing. I think the first night Sam said he went in sober, and it just didn't hit.

For me, the main reason to see Satriani play Van Halen songs is that it would be fun see a great artist play in a different way than he's used to. I know its going to sound different and that is the point. I've already said several times, Eddie would have his work cut out for him if he was to play Satriani's stuff -- and that's not a bad thing. In fact, it would be really cool! Van Halen was the world's best cover band in my opinion. They had to play all kinds of songs written by different artists. I love how Eddie would interpret other songs.

Deraps...I don't know anything about him, but he seems like a one-trick pony. And that is not very interesting to me. Sure, he can play the Van Halen catalog, but they might as well just get a robot or a computer do it. it would probably be the same experience. Chemistry is a real thing in a band. Shorthand between members in a band is important. When a band is getting along and is on the same wavelength, all kinds of cool unexpected things can happen. What if they decide to do a random improved jam for a few minutes? Maybe Deraps or any of those bedroom rockers can do that too, but I'd rather hear what Satriani would come up with.

I never understood the mindset of picking up a guitar and just wanting to sound and play exactly like EVH all the time. You take your influences and grow from them and develop your own style. Playing like EVH doesn't make you EVH. Making youtube videos of playing EVH solo's doesn't make you EVH. It's one of the downfalls of the internet. Everyone can become their own "star".

You know why people still remember and talk about Vito Bratta 30+ years after he graced the stage with an electric guitar? Because he put a band together and wrote music. He busted his ass in dirty clubs around NYC/NJ - got a record deal and had success and some big hits and played all over the world. He didn't sit around saying "Look at me! I can play Eruption!".

If Eddie just sat in his room forever playing Clapton's Crossroads solo, we wouldn't even have this forum....

True. I am naturally focusing on Joe and I am really interested in his interpretations. Take Summer Nights solo on Stern for example. It was different but in a good way. This is another meaning of "best of both (or all) worlds" - Ed's music reinvented by Joe.
"If you ever speak to me like that again, you better be wearing a cup" - EVH, 1996

"Stupid neighbors called the cops/Now the party's over/Angry housewife wants my name/Tell her it's 'Ben Dover"

Sammy Hagar made Van Halen even better. Deal with it.

So glad you mentioned Vito. He is my second favorite guitarist from that era. Ed is my favorite in all eras, mind you. If Vito were still active, he would have been my absolute pick to play guitar in a band honoring Eddie Van Halen. Vito was certainly influenced by Ed but was his own man. He wrote some great riffs and great songs. Like Ed, he always looks natural with his instrument. Vito had feeling.

This whole tour announcement has brought out a lot of opinions, that's for sure.

I'm cool with Satriani on guitar.
He's a much respected guitarist in his own right, who clearly has an admiration for EVH's work.
Satch doesn't need to play the songs note for note, just do them justice. I'm sure he will.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

    Default Sammy on Stern Tuesday

It’s funny when Ed used to cover other artists back when he was a kid playing covers, they never sounded like the originals. They sounded like Ed. Nobody has ever complained that young Eddie Van Halen didn’t play his covers exactly like the original artist. People lauded him for the fact that he put his own spin on them. But now everyone’s all pissed off that Joe Satriani isn’t playing the songs identical to Ed.

I don’t think the point of this tour is for Satch to pretend he’s Eddie Van Halen. It’s not Van Halen. He’s going to be Joe Satriani playing the songs the way that he plays. Joe is an amazing player, so I am interested in his interpretation.

Don’t wanna hear that? Then don’t go.

I feel like the bait and switch is gonna happen.

Vic will play the Sammy solo tunes.

They just haven’t told us yet.
