Default Coulda's 2nd Favorite Rock Guitarist Tournament

For obvious reasons, there is no Eddie Van Halen in this tournament. Here are the match ups for the first round:

    Randy Rhoads vs Zakk Wylde

    Jeff Beck vs Eric Johnson

    Jimmy Page vs Pete Townsend

    Steve Vai vs Joe Satriani

    Jimi Hendrix vs Tony Iommi

Yngwie Malmsteen vs Jake E Lee

Stevie Ray Vaughan vs Eric Clapton

    Ritchie Blackmore vs Angus Young

Eric Johnson doesn't even belong in this list. Never heard anything else but Dover. Typical Coulda addition. I bet Johnson is from Southern Cal, that's why.

Sorry but the Extreme discography doesn't really make him influential or orginal enough. Technique-wise there are also mamy other guys who are better than him like e.g. Andy Timmons, Paul Gilbert etc. Had Cherone not joined VH we wouldn't even have talked about Extreme that much. This band was just more of an afterthought, late to the party Queen/Aerosmith epigones.

It's because Yngwie doesn't have the songs or riffs. That's the knock on him. Technically, he's miles above Jake, but unfortunately, we're gonna base our decisions on songs and not wankery.

    We always do.

    Jeff Beck vs Eric Johnson

    Jimmy Page vs Pete Townsend

    Steve Vai vs Joe Satriani

    Jimi Hendrix vs Tony Iommi

Yngwie Malmsteen vs Jake E Lee

Randy Rhoads vs Zakk Wylde - Seriously? I mean, come on.

Jeff Beck vs Eric Johnson- Johnson is great, but this is Jeff Beck we’re talking about.

Jimmy Page vs Pete Townsend- Both men are legends but Jimmy’s soloing, chord structures , and acoustic playing are phenomenal.

    Steve Vai vs Joe Satriani-

Jimi Hendrix vs Tony Iommi- Love Tony but Jimi is the electric god.

Yngwie Malmsteen vs Jake E Lee- Jake is nowhere near Yngwie in any category. And I have nothing against Jake, he can play.

Stevie Ray Vaughan vs Eric Clapton- No disrespect to Clapton , but his guitar hero days ended with Cream. He was massively influential but he was surpassed by his contemporaries very quickly. Stevie is on another level and one of the greatest ever.

Ritchie Blackmore vs Angus Young- Angus is a very underrated guitar player, the man can play some tasty licks but this is Ritchie Fuckin’ Blackmore.

Apart from being the godfather of shred, he’s the godfather of the neo classical rock guitar movement and a tremendous blues player.

His influence is massive. No Ritchie= No Eddie, No Yngwie. No Schenker. Shit, nearly every European guitar player alone for that matter would sound totally different.
