Default Pearl Jam's Mike McCready Says He Finally Learned 'Eruption'

Pearl Jam's Mike McCready Says He Finally Learned 'Eruption'
Thanks to YouTube, Opens Up on Eddie Van Halen Influence

"I always thought that this was something that was completely out of reach, that I would never be able to do 'Eruption'."

The beauty of Eddie Van Halen's legacy is powerfully illustrated in the fact that it influenced both the '80s hair metal movement, as well as many players within the early '90s grunge scene which proved to be the former's downfall.

Among the Seattle greats who directly took notes from Eddie's playbook is Pearl Jam's Mike McCready. During Pearl Jam's tour last year, McCready felt the need to pay homage to the fallen hero during his band's gig at Glendale, Arizona.

"I don't think we've played a show since Eddie Van Halen passed away, and he was another legend that we miss.

And so we’ve been wanting to play one for him", the guitarist said, before launching into a sizzling cover of Eddie's world-famous "Eruption".

Looking back on that moment from today's perspective, he tells Guitar World in a recent interview:

"Eddie Van Halen to me was a huge deal. I started playing when I was 12 years old and that's right when his first record came out, and it was unlike anything I had ever heard.

"I heard Hendrix and he always was my hero and still is to this day, and then Eddie was another version of a guitar hero that felt like he came from outer space or something.

Like, 'What is this? What is this 'Eruption' thing?'"

As the guitarist explains, he never thought he'd be able to tackle "Eruption" by ear, but the advent of YouTube made learning the solo much easier:

"You know, I'm just starting to play 'Smoke on the Water' at that time.

And I'm very young – I'd just started playing in bands when I was 12. So, when Eddie came out, he blew everybody's mind.

I always thought that this was something that was completely out of reach, that I would never be able to do 'Eruption'.

"And thank God for YouTube, because there's guys that have picked out every single note.

Other people figured it out for me, so I didn't have to try to figure it out. And I just made myself go: 'Okay, I'm gonna do this.'

This is my test to myself to see if I can actually do it."

    He added:

"And I'm almost there. I'm still struggling with a few parts of it. You know, I'll never truly get it.

But it's a masterpiece to try to do, so I want to do it the best I can.

"Oh man, I love him. I saw him four times live with David Lee Roth back in the day and it was unreal, seeing him live."

For Pearl Jam, I recommend they cover Running With The Devil. That would be closer to their style. Since they now have Matt Cameron, he's good at singing harmonies, he used to harmonize with Chris in SG, I'm sure he cane do the RWTD harmonies.

They break out Ain't Talkin' 'Bout love every now and then.

There's two kinds of music: There's music I like, and there's music I don't like.

I swear I thought I saw a video of this guy doing Eruption years ago?

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I want bands to cover VH songs, all of them.

But, please, don't try to do Eruption. Ever.

I like when anyone tries to do Eruption. Ed started that... it's very rock and roll bed rock footers.

Ed thought other cats should come up with their own Eruption. I think he was right about that.

Talking about VH / The King has become the go-to way for any of these guys to get publicity online. Like every week someone else says they were almost the singer for VH or can play eruption or they met Eddie at Taco Bell once, etc...

It's kind of annoying. Ed's all the rage in death, now.

I can now comfortably talk about this.

I met Eddie at a Shoneys in Montgomery, Alabama in 2004. Really don’t know why the hell he was in Alabama. But there was a taxi out front waiting on him.

We got to talking over the breakfast buffet and between him going to the bathroom all the time and his southwest breakfast, we really hit it off.

He offered me the lead singer position for Van Halen for the 2006 tour. He told me I was a competent Gary cherone.

Then he got all sober and shit and changed his phone number.

    What could have been…….
