Default Back In Black & 5150

    Random thought.....
Back In Black & 5150 were both amazing records, in my opinion.
They both share a common denominator as both bands had material teed up for the original singers.( Bon Scott / David Lee Roth)
Both of those albums ended up being my favorite albums with the "new" singers. I love Back in Black & 5150.
All good stuff!! I do feel it was the strongest material for each band with said new singers.
Brian Johnson sang his ass off as did Sammy on the respective albums.
That said, I've always wondered what would have been with the original singers. Bon & Dave were both legendary by this point of each bands career.
The material on each album still had the groove & vibe of the original band(s) and I love that.
For my money, Best of Both Worlds riff is Ed's best AC/DC riff!! Ed Loved AC/DC and that riff feels soooo AC/DC influenced.

Again, just my opinion, that ( song/material -wise) is where it ends for me. I certainly enjoyed other moments / songs with Brian & Sammy fronting said bands, but the Genie was out of the bottle for me personally.
It's an amazing feat to step into a legendary band and keep the magic going. Brian & Sammy did it. But it became "vanilla" to me after both "debut" albums with the new singers.
Back in Black has sold some crazy amount of records ( 25 million!!??)
5150 sold millions as well. I wore out both albums.
    Rock on Folks! CV

Great albums no doubt. I don't try to compare great albums by great bands. Just enjoy them for what they are.

How about Heaven & Hell from Black Sabbath? Talk about a killer comeback with the late great Ronnie James Dio. Like Back in Black, it reminds me of my high school school days when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was taking off!

In my opinion, Back in Black and 5150 are the two greatest debut albums from bands with a second singer. And, 5150 is my favorite album of all time.

Agree 5150 is the greatest debut album for a band who’s original singer was still alive and well. However, It’s tough to compare the two bands imo. Bon Scott passing away wasn’t going to cause their base to split. Add the fact they went in a way similar to what Journey did by using a reasonably similar sounding singer as the original and their success becomes far less impressive.

Let’s also not forget AC/DC wasn’t coming off huge success when Bon died. Van Halen on the other hand was arguably the biggest hard rock band in the world when Roth left.

Factoring in the above 5150 is a unique and extremely impressive record. (I became a fan in 78 so I was crushed when Roth left.) Like with most divorced couples, people feel like they need to pick sides, for lack of a better analogy. That was easy for me. Not only was Roth’s schtick getting old, I was an EVH fan far more than a Roth fan. It really (and irrationally) became a “choose your side” situation. Sammy did what I think few if any singers could do. He helped bring new fans to the table and expanded the base. Wasn’t better than Roth’s version but 5150 and the records that followed were undeniably massive hits. 5150 was the crown jewel for that era.

For me comparing Back in Black to 5150 is comparing apples to oranges. Far different circumstances.

Out of the 3 albums you mention, I only own 1 of them (5150) and I haven't listened to that in years...

Both great albums but far different categories. One is likely in the top 5 of all time of hard rock albums. The other is the best album with the 2nd singer. I love 5150 but its nowhere close to Back in Black for popularity, longevity, impact, etc Both albums are great achievements by both singers but I would say 5150 is closer to Heaven and Hell than BIB.

Plus from a productioni element, BIB is much better and organic than 5150 which lends to its playability. 5150 sound like it was made in the 80's. BIB is classic rock more similar to FW or VH1.

Great album but this is like comparing Clyde Drexler to Michael Jordan Lebron or Kobe

Back in Black is the winner just because it was and still is so huge.

But for me, it is Number of the Beast, you can easily argue that is Maiden's best album and it is one of the standard bearers of great heavy metal albums, there isn't a discussion about great heavy metal albums without NOTB being included, and Dickinson was such an upgrade over DiAnno.

5150 is just not to that level. A great accomplishment replacing DLR and landing on their feet, most bands couldn't do that, we sometimes forget that in 1985, DLR was probably one of the top 5 most popular rock stars in the world, that isn't easy to replace and they somehow did it. But 5150 as someone else mentioned isn't even widely considered one of the best albums of the band, it is considered the best Hagar era album, but it is down the list of best VH albums for most music fans.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

    Thumbs up

Van Halen - 5150 is easily my favorite album with a 2nd singer.

Journey - Arrival with Steve Augeri is my 2nd favorite. I love that album.

Back In Black is loaded with radio hits. It is also a great album for sure.
