I know this goes without saying but when listening to Eddie play, you can tell how strong his pimp hand is. Playing unamplified guitars (one I think being a Les Paul) and you can hear the guitar coming through an obvious cheap tape recorder microphone. Strings are snapping. Interesting to know the intro to Women in Love is double tracked.

Also interesting to here Jas not knowing anything about tapped harmonics. Was a bit baffled at the concept. Today we just go "of course you tap an ocatave above and you get the harmonic" Back then a guitar writer was clueless.

EVH's intro to Women In Love is one the best compositions he ever created. Truly sublime!

    Glad they saved it.

Hunniebabysweetiedoll is a better use of that riff.

& The rest of it showing up in Get Up & House of Pain. Saving it was worth it.

Not only an octave above. You can also tap a 4th and a 5th above. Ah, the possibilities.

I know absolutely zero about playing a guitar but this interview proves just how much he MASTERED the guitar. Playing Spanish Fly like it’s nothing amongst other genius riffs.

What an amazing musician he was.

I still remember buying that magazine nearly 43 years ago one weekday afternoon at a music store in La Mirada, CA. I couldn't wait to get home from baseball practice and read every single word about my musical hero. I still have my copy upstairs in a box in the closet.

Cuda, I still have Jas Obrecht's coffee table book Masters of Heavy Metal which I bought back in 1984. It's not in very good condition but I still love it! Pick up a copy if you can find one, lots of killer interviews and pics of rock gods of that era, including Van Halen.

This is a great interview. Can’t believe he had these ideas and riffs so far back. No telling what’s in those vaults.

This kind of thing is really part of the “vault” that I appreciate. Just raw. Storytelling, talking about guitars, music, etc. And the best part is, someone is just gracious enough to put it out there for all to enjoy. Stuff like this kind of reinvigorates my fandom, as it really is new to me.

It’s astonishing that it takes 3rd party folks who just appreciate Eddie, or Van Halen as a band to get these sorts of things out there. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be appreciated and enjoyed, or even purchased and enjoyed, as long as it’s genuine and real like this. As Dave said, “it ain’t rocket surgery”.
