MICHAEL ANTHONY Says 'There Has Been Some Talk' About Releasing Career-Spanning VAN HALEN Box Set

In a new interview with "The Jeremy White Podcast", ex-VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony confirmed that there has been talk of putting together a career-spanning box set from his former band, including rare and previously unreleased bonus material. "I know Warner has brought up the question, would we like to do that, as far as like a box set," he said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). "Obviously, it all happens after Eddie [Van Halen, VAN HALEN guitarist] passed, and it's, like, 'Hey, let's cash in on this and that or whatever,' which I don't want any part of that… But I know there has been some talk about doing a box set and redoing some stuff, but I think it's kind of in the early works, and nobody's really talked that much about it yet. But I'm sure, and I also hope, that that will happen."

Anthony also talked about the possibility of remixing and remastering some of the classic VAN HALEN albums in order to bring out the bass and make the mix sound more "modern." "Of course, it's tough with Ed not being here, to be able to go in, as far as doing anything with the guitar, which you really don't need to, because his guitar sound is always incredible," he said. "But I'm sure, at some point, we'll get together possibly with Alex [Van Halen, drums] and maybe Ed's son Wolfgang and do something like that. I think it'd be a great thing to do."

VAN HALEN and Anthony had not been on good terms for more than a decade, with Anthony not invited to join the reunion with singer David Lee Roth that began in 2007. The subsequent two tours and studio album, "A Different Kind Of Truth", featured Wolfgang Van Halen on bass.

Anthony took a pay cut and signed away all of his rights to the band name and logo in order to participate in VAN HALEN's 2004 tour, which featured Sammy Hagar on vocals.

Last November, Wolfgang revealed that Eddie had contemplated a "kitchen-sink tour" that would have included Anthony, as well as vocal turns from both Sammy Hagar and Roth. There was even talk about bringing back Gary Cherone, who sang with VAN HALEN on one poorly received album, 1998's "Van Halen III".

Eddie died in October at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California. The iconic VAN HALEN axeman passed away from complications due to cancer, his son confirmed.

It's the only thing Blabbermouth excels at.

They've been talking box sets since the 90's. That is the one thing that VH as a business unit does extremely well, talk about the things they might release...and rarely do.

the next box set we get would be if they remaster the albums they did with Hagar - a box containing those with no extras

Yes, but, according to that article, Mikey said it was early: "...but I know there has been some talk about doing a box set and redoing some stuff, but I think it's kind of in the early works, and nobody's really talked that much about it yet. But I'm sure, and I also hope, that that will happen."

So if this article was 2 years ago, maybe they're done and it's just about ready to release.

Damn, almost got through typing that with a straight face...

Yeah. Until it is in my hands, I won't believe it.

Since 1998, through all the promised and undelivered, talked about and delivered, and the delivered and underwhelming, this is what they have put out.

BOBW with three crappy new songs. Let's just say what it is, Ed was in no shape to record and everyone knows it. Mike wasn't even on them...hard pass.

ADKOT...without Mike again, but kudos to WVH in getting them together on it, a solid effort.

Tokyo Dome...where out of the hundreds of good shows they did, they picked maybe one of the worst shows by the VHIV lineup to release.

And that is it. In 25 years, so, I ain't getting my hopes up.

But just in case anyone in VH land is reading...you release anything that hasn't been released before multiple times, I will buy it.

And that includes LWAN in audio format. Especially that actually, would spend good money for a remastered LWAN audit (full show please).

I really wish instead of Tokyo Dome they put out a live album from the 2007-08 tour. I know there has been talk--I think you've mentioned it many times before, DD--of them having a recorded show ready to go from that tour. But THAT is the live album we should've had. Dave's vocals were strong on that tour. Just watched a vid of Romeo Delight from that tour in Baltimore--has one of my favorite breakdowns on that song.
    Plus they played Atomic Punk!

I know people complain that Eddie wasn't up to par on that tour and had some bad nights (along with the postponed shows and the rehab stint)--fortunately for me the shows I saw were great and Eddie was just fine to my ears.

A complete boxset is a no brainer they already have a catchy name for it "The Kitchen Sink". Now for Warner getting ADKOT and Tokyo Dome might be a hurdle unless Interscope allows it to be licensed because it won't be complete without ADKOT,TD. Throw in any unreleased live footage on a BD, music video dvd/bd, unreleased demos (the unreleased Cherone stuff would be a huge selling point for this set except for a few forum members here, lol). They would obviously do both Vinyl/CD. It would be hard for me to not buy both CD and Vinyl sets assuming they have added new stuff like unreleased demos and live footage to this set. I really hope if this ever happens they name it just The Kitchen Sink because it will cover all 3 era's of Van Halen it would have to to be complete. Ed would have wanted this potential set to be called The Kitchen Sink and it's catchy. The Kitchen Sink Van Halen boxset, nice.

Wonder if Dave has anything from the multiple “Failing of Van Halen” attempts that he could/would release.

My guess would be that they are strictly in demo form, maybe even where the song cuts off early and there is the explosion sound effect at the end, and nothing close to being a releasable song.

They would have to take the demo and re-work it, and I am not sure either DLR or Al are up for that. We shall see.

That's all you can do when it comes to Van Halen. Most normal artists by now if a key player in their band passed on would have had some unreleased songs or demos released by now but this is Van Halen. I know the Cherone demos are not in hot demand but after Ed's passing it would have been refreshing to hear something out of the legend we never heard before. They must have a ton of unreleased demos with DLR and Hagar would love to hear all of that to. Instead as expected we got nothing. DLR has released more unreleased stuff than Wolf or Al has. Wolf is just to focused on his own music career to give a crap really. Al who knows. Even the Kitchen Sink boxset is likely a pipe dream. At this point if they do anything for Ed in the future it will just simply be an unexpected surprise.
