Sooo many great tidbits in it, and a really great feel of where Dave's head was at regarding the band back then.

Can you imagine Dave trying to talk to Eddie about his ideas?? My God, talk about two different sides of the solar system.

Yet, something about those two mixing brain matter just clicked. Out of the brimstone and fire came music that changed the world.

    Awesome stuff.
That's why I made the Black Sabbath comment. I think if Eddie and Alex had controlled the vision of VH, it wouldn't have been nearly as colorful. Eddie, Alex and Mike were the best rhythm section to make VH incredible, Eddie guitar playing put it over the top and Dave brought the whole thing to life with his musical influences. Can you imagine any of the 80's hard rock band pulling off a tune like Big Bad Bill? I know some don't care for it but I absolutely love it. It just shows me that VH could have been just as rockin' in the 1920's (even though the proper term would have been swingin'). You can thank Dave for that 100%.

Thanks for taking the time to post your comments. I haven't actually watched these new batches of Roth Show's yet, but thanks to you I'm going to get on it quickly.

Gotta say, it's very nice to see your comments here so enthusiastic & appreciative it reminds me why I read this fan club page all these years. It's fun to be a fan. I think.

But I'm just so used to lousy whining & bitching & negative critical types of commentary towards David.

Your post's actually shocked me and I'm not kidding. It's nice to see there's normal regular fan's that dig the actual content .

    Bottoms Up.

I am a lifelong VH fan. I started playing drums and listening to VH in the summer of 1982 when I was 11. While I would have loved to have seen the OG stay together forever, I knew it couldn't last and I loved the Sammy years too. I'm sure I do some bitching and complaining at times too but it's probably more because I love and respect these guys so much, I hope for better. I certainly have done my share of ragging on Dave's voice but it's only because I love it so much and I feel like he does not take care of it at times and tries to do things he shouldn't. The best I ever heard him sing was on the tour he did in 1994. It was a small club in Boston and he was literally forced to straight up interact with the audience as they were right in his face. Dave has always interacted with an audience but he's usually looking out over a sea of faces and talking to the crowd like there is 300,00 people there. This was the Paradise in Boston and there was barely room for him to move around and the crowd was right there. He sang absolutely great that night and was forced to be the singer I know he "can" be. I don't mind any of the extra stuff he does IF his vocals sound decent. I know there are plenty of people that say he never sounded decent but that simply isn't true. People get old and I understand that 100% but it bugs me to see Dave struggling so much and then covering up things with backing tracks. Like it's beyond weird to hear Panama with his own 1984 recorded voice singing the part of "doncha know she's coming home with me".

Anyway I will always love this band until I die and am very thankful to have seen them as many times as I did. Kids today have no idea. maybe just maybe one day some really cool old school video footage will show up. I won't hold my breath though.

I've also done my fair share of ragging on Dave's live vocals at times, but I definitely love the tone of his voice and I sometimes felt his live vocals suffered because he just was not trying very hard. I thought he was very good live from 1978-1981, then he was more "off" on the Diver Down and 1984 tours for whatever reason. When he came back in 2007 I thought he did great on that 2007-2008 tour. Then in 2012 it was step down again, but that may be related to some health issues he had evidently. DLR was the perfect singer and frontman for that band, even if there were times that Ed and Al did not feel that way.

i think one of the best things the van halen camp could do is release some footage, they haven't officially released any live footage, Largo and US fest were leaked and they are terrible quality

DLR is my favorite rock singer ever, warts and all. His schtick and whoops and shrieks are all one-of-a-kind. He's not for everyone, but he's my favorite. My second favorite rock singer is Roger Daltry, and I think you could make all the same arguments about both of them - bad notes - bad nights - bad tours, etc. but those two guys ARE rock and roll and music to their core and somehow it comes out no matter how they sound. All that to say, release some old live stuff - Ed's gonna be awesome, Al's gonna be Al, Mike's gonna be lost in the mix and Dave will kill it. It's party-time rock and roll at its best.

Just listened to the new Episode of the Roth Show (Ep 7) and Roth says that he suggested to Ed and Al that VH go out and open for Queen, doing stadiums and both Ed and Al liked the idea.. Not heard that before... It is said near the end of the show...

Would of been a great night out.

Both bands were very fond of each other. VH used Queen as a template for their presentation. I think “bigger than life” is how Dave described VH’s view of it.

I hate the way Dave CHOSE to sing a good bit of the time the last couple of tours (and on ADKOT a bit) and have also been vocal about that.

But otherwise, I love Dave. Soundtrack of my youth.

I don't think there's all that much bashing of Dave other than his choice of how he sang in his latter years, and I guess that's spilled over into his "reinterpretations" of VH classics recently. But to me, pretty much all the same topic.

Other than that, he's Diamond David Lee freaking Roth. Legend. GOAT of front men.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Brian and Ed were definitely good friends. I think their playing is so different that there was never any issue of one competing with the other.

Yeah I'm going to listen to this one I noticed the VHND posted the Queen mention and it's definitely a brand new tidbit.

I'd have to search back to 2019 or whenever but my memory seems to recall the tour was booked & some of the Stadium date's were leaked quietly with Heart and Lynard Sykynard in certain cities?????

Moot point now of course I guess probably never even true but now very interested to hear about this Queen idea.

We all remember David's comments about playing Yankee Stadium maybe with someone famous someone sporting" in late 2018.

If they did in fact tour with Queen who would headline. Maybe they'd switch top billing every other show. The Queen fan demographic is very different from the VH nowdays. I think far more widespread.

Not to mention the new singer. Queen have been very much like Journey for several years. Replacement singer but yet still drawing decent crowds performing in arena's.

I'm surprised by this Queen idea. I'll have to listen to hear with my own ears.

Look at VH's stage setup. Those higher up stages on the side & in the front. I think Queen did that first. Plus those lights that go up into the venue from below. You can see on the Queen Rock Montreal official video from 1980 or 81.

Many Queen VH variables to consider. There's a photo of David at the Queen concert in 1976 posted by Michael White who was in the band The Boyz at the time in 1976. I posted it here years ago in the photo thread.

David interview Brian May on his radio show and they discussed Brian May vintage PA equipment.

From my view, at the time of Freddie's passing, VH was bigger than Queen. At least in the States. I don't ever remember Queen being considered bigger than Van Halen, much less as iconic as they are now.

The job that the surviving members have done in cultivating that band's legacy is astounding. Queen is bigger now than they ever were when Freddie was alive. They've probably (almost certainly) sold more records since Freddie died than they did before.

Just an amazing job, and also goes to show you that when a star like that passes when they are still big, the legend just continues to grow.

Queen is the model of how to get it done after the original band is done or a member passes. Zeppelin has done a great job as well, but Zep was way bigger than Queen when Bonham died, and still is, so while they've probably gotten bigger, it hasn't been a big a jump in 'status' as Queen did.
