Some will take this the wrong way, but damn, the fact that Templeman and Landee got workable recorded vocals out of Roth on the first album is amazing. He obviously was not a finished product yet.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Those takes, he was definitely a lot more "busy" in his approach. Too busy. They got it right on the album tracks.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Are those the same ones that were released on YT like 5 years ago or are these different? I'd have to re-listen but it sounds like it.

I think it's pretty clear that the fact that TT was an "in-house" producer from WB, a vice-president of the record company, a symbol of "The Man," meant that the band wasn't as grateful as they should've been towards him. He created the Van Halen sound and gave the band a pop sensibility they didn't have initially. The vocals of Van Halen - that's TT.

Actually since the music was done along with backgrounds, I think what Ted was doing with Dave here is just have him noodle around to get some moments to put on the finished vocal track. Sort of like Eddie punching in Jump solo. He did it on other songs too. In other words, I think this was done later in the process than early on. Dave was "noodling"

I would assume this is how you ended up with the stuff "Hey man that suit is you..." or the end of Everybody Wants Some.

Kinid of cool to hear the ending of Dance the Night Away

The music is pretty much what was on the album so theyíre probably the first rough vocal passes.

Piecing Dave’s takes together was still miles ahead of what was to come.

Itís really not that out of the ordinary for guys to sing several vocal takes and producers to comp them together to get one good track. It happens all the time even for the greatest singers. And yes, these tracks have been around for years by the way.

I mean, I know very little about recording, but even in our band recorded our vocals that way. Our singer did about three or four tracks for each song, and we pieced together the best takes. Itís not that big of a deal.

Shit many bands do one line at a time.

The thing is, youíre probably never going to hear alternate guitar takes because the band played live back in those days. Ed didnít overdub anything other than a few solos here and there. So unless they have entirely different takes of the songs, thatís the only way youíll ever hear a different version of Edís playing.
